Overnight guests at 38 weeks???

DH's nieces, who live in England, just told us that they have booked a trip to NY, coming in June 6. One of the boyfriends is coming too. They want to stay with us for a few nights before heading to their other Aunt's house for the rest of their trip.

We live in a 2 bed/1 bath apartment, so guests are a tight squeeze normally, but now the 2nd bedroom is the nursery (the furniture isn't in yet, but should arrive that week and then we need to put everything that is currently in the living room away!) and I really don't like the idea of having them sleep in the living room since it's our only common space, plus if I work from home this is where I work!

I will be 38 weeks on June 8 and just not sure I want to host at that point. I'm also a little concerned about getting sick from people who just got off a 7 hour flight (is that paranoid?), and literally 2 of the last 4 times they came to visit they came down with some sort of throat infection.

But on the other hand I love them and we hardly ever get to see them because of the distance. We're all close in age, they're not kids that need to be looked after, it's more that the apartment is such a tight squeeze.

Does anyone think that hosting at 38 weeks is a good idea? I'm not sure what to do, and if I'm overreacting or not. This is my first pregnancy and I'm not sure how I will feel!

Sorry this is so long!!!

TIA!!!

I wouldnt worry about catching anything from them at 38 weeks. God forbid you did, the baby could be delievered and would be fine.

As far as them sleeping in the living room, thats a personal choice. It sounds like they only want to stay a few days...so I think I'd make the sacrafice. That or put the nursery furniture in the living room and give them air mattresses in the second bedroom!

Being that you dont see them often, I'd embrace it! Chat Icon

if it was local family or friends then I'd say no, but they're coming from England. The good part is your home and close to your hospital. You won't be traveling and it's just a few days. Just make it clear your due around then. They're more than welcome to stay, but you can't guarantee you won't go into labor and then you'll need the house and room for the baby.

if it's already stressing you out, then maybe offer to find a cheap hotel close by for them. it does sound like a tight squeeze, but they should be understanding of your circumstances too. i dont think i would want house guests during that time either.

I agree.... suggest an inexpensive place nearby - I would think they would understand the tight squeeze, as well as the timing of it all - you could very well go into labor or even have the baby home by then - who knows!?!?!

Personally I wouldn't want house guests then....

honestly, i woudnt want anyone staying with me when i'm 38 weeks. especially if they are coming from out of the country.
and you can go into labor at 38 weeks so that's more stress added that is not needed. just my opinion.

I think that if they do come and stay, you should just make it clear that at 38 weeks pregnant, you are not up for entertaining...get takeout, rent movies, but don't go above and beyond playing hostess...

Totally unrelated, BUT kinda related (lol), I was just a bridesmaid at 38 weeks pregnant, and around 30 weeks I REALLY started to 2nd guess my decision to stay in the wedding...I thought I would just feel tired, and miserable...PPL on this board encouraged me to stick with it, and I did and Im SO HAPPY that I did...Somehow, I had tons of energy that day, and all the things I was worried about (dress not fitting, not being able to go to the bathroom, taking tons of pro pics) wound up working out just fine, and the bride really appreciated me being apart of her day!

I guess my point is that anticipating how you might feel is prob worse than how you will actually feel when the time comes!

If all was okay, I would not have a problem hosting people. However, I would give them the heads up that they may need to make alternate plans at the last minute in case LO decides to make an appearance. I would also let them know to expect a very low key hosting job as a PP said.
