Out of the mouths of babes...
So I was at the fireworks at the Town of North Hempstead Park last night. I was on line for the bathroom and there was a grandmother with her granddaughter (who was probably about 7 or 8 years old) on line in front of me. Someone they knew passed them, looked at the little girl and said:
"Oh look how chubby you got!"
Which made me STEAM because:
#1 - I was a chubby kid and comments like that DO scar you for life and hurt like hell. Still does even when they are directed at someone else.
and
#2 - You NEVER talk like that to someone else's child. Had I been the grandmother, I would have clocked her on the head.
So I listened to how the girl responded. She said:
"Well you are too skinny and you have flabby arms. HOW DO YOU LIKE ME NOW?"
I wanted to "High-5" this little girl something awful. ATTA GIRL! She is going places!

I like that little girl! However, at her age I would have never "talked back" to an adult like that...
I agree though, things like that sting and don't go away....my mom always used to grab my spare tire and say "Where did this come from??!!" And it still bugs me to this day.

Good for her. That little girl is going to get along wonderfully in life. As a chubby kid, I couldn't agree more. That kind of stuff stays with you forever.
Alternatively, my two kids are thin (especially my oldest), and I get just as annoyed when people constantly comment on her thinness as if its a virtue and an accomplishment. While I'm happy that my kids will likely not have weight problems (because I know what a true PIA it is), its not something to be applauded either. My older daughter is tired of hearing me say "as long as she is healthy", in response to people who tell her how thin she is.

But as that kid that was chubby, i bet she was till hurt by the comment. she sounds like me, making jokes to hide the pain. but i must say i admire her feisty attitude!

I am sure she was, I would have been too. But like the old saying goes, "If you can dish it out, you can take it."
In years past, had I responded like that, I may have received a little "talking to." But in this day and age of kids with severe body image issues, I would rather a see a confident and strong-willed little girl, than one who cowers and becomes reclusive - ashamed of who she is. An adult should know better.
What I wished she added into her comment was that not only was this woman too skinny with flabby arms, but that her teeth were yellow and she stunk like cigarettes too (as she lit up in front of us). I call it like I see it.

As a former chubbo myself, I wish I had the guts to answer the way that child did - and people made comments like that all the time to me!!!! Good for her!!!!

Also, what kind of human being says that to anyone???? Would she say that to a grown woman as well, or felt it was ok because it was a child?
