Our Stair Progress-Updated December 30, 2010!!!!

So back in March 2009 (wow, almost a whole year ago Chat Icon ) I posted this thread about us starting our stairs . After that- in August, we finally started to recap our stairs and get them done.

Here are some progression pictures. I really hope these will be done by May, I'm getting really impatient.

Our foyer the way the original owners had it. We painted over the wallpaper, because there was just way too much of it.

We ripped the orange carpet off the stairs and found the treads cracked underneath.

To give an idea of what our tile floor will look like in the area. Which is being stored in our garage for over a year now-don't even get me started on that.

External Image

How molding 'might' look when we're done.

External Image

We plan to NOT gooseneck the railings.

External Image

Stairs capped, but not stained or painted. I hope we'll do some of that this weekend. We got the caps from a company called Stairtek online, but DH had to put up the bullnosing (for where the ballisters will go on for the railing). He installed all the new risers (the white back parts) and the treads. He put in the newel posts, really did a great job so far.

External Image

Ignore the paper and rug on the landing, we put it there to protect the wood underneath. The chair is also there because I'm trying to figure out what kind of bench or chair I can put there for putting on our shoes.

External Image

That's it so far. We do have the railing purchased, and we plan on making the ballisters white with a chamfer for some design.

Update as of May 20th

We're getting there...slowly but surely. The stairs have been stained and polyed.

And the small balcony has ballisters and a banister!!!!

More pics to come as DH does more. Man, this is the longest project EVER!!!

Update June 7, 2010

DH has the banisters and ballisters all in place on the upper level. The only part we have left is the lower banisters/ballisters....almost there!!!!

UPDATE December 30, 2010

*****THEY ARE DONE*********

DH finished my stairs tonight!! I am so freakin' excited!!!! The little touches like molding have to be done, but I have railings!!! I have ballisters!! I have STAIRS!!!!!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

This process took 1 year and 9 months, loooonnggg impatient months (on my part). I am so proud of my DH for doing such a wonderful job. Now, for the finished product!!!

Ta da!!!!

So did my grandfather...he wanted to know if we were saving it all. We had a lot of it that I could have given you to carpet your house.Chat Icon

Wow! Its going to look Great!!!!!

We need to do our stairs eventually and that is exactly how I want them to look... Can't wait to see your finished product!

Is your DH doing it all by himself? DH wants to do it, is pretty handy, so I'm wondering how difficult it is.

Yes, but he does ask questions to our dads on what they think the right way to do some things are.

Re: Our Stair Progress

Question for you guys, do you think that this chair would look like a dining room chair that has been misplaced? If we put it in the area at the bottom of the stairs where the chair in the pic is now?

I don't think its a dining room chair at all, its way to wide. I actually love it! many times they use a dining style chairs in a foyer anyway!

Looks great Janine!! I can't believe he's doing it all himself!! After all of the work that we did to our house I cringe when I think of doing big projects, so I give Rob LOTS of credit Chat Icon Chat Icon

Wow! That looks great and so professional! Great job your DH is doing!!

I am scared. We are removing the spindles posts and handrails on ou staircase sometime this year. I know it's going to be a LONG process...but I can see that it will be worth the results b.c your stairs are looking great!!!

Thank you!!! I really just cannot wait to have a handrail upstairs, because I can't let DS roam around up there on his own.
