Our Skylight is leaking - Updated

We can't believe it, this morning, we woke up went into the kitchen and the curtain in the kitchen was soaking wet. Only 8 months ago we had a new roof and new skylights put in, in the kitchen. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon So it's leaking down the wall into the molding around the window and down the window and curtains. These are the things that come up and you have to spend money on to fix. We are really stressed out right now. Chat Icon Great way to start our weekend and it's supposed to rain on and off until tomorrow. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Sorry Jen Chat Icon

I had the same problem when we bought the house and did not want to deal with the chance of it happening again, we took the skylight out all together and closed up the hole.

I would have the Contractor come back ASAP. If you replaced the roof and the skylight, that should not be happening, it was not installed correctly.

Good luck!

Couldn't agree more, esp if they guarantee their work.

Re: Our Skylight is leaking

We aren't sure about their guarantee and we really didn't like the job that they did. So we really don't want them back in our house, but if they would fix it for free, then I guess we have no choice for now. Chat Icon

Jen as much as you might not have liked the work, do not let this go and pay someone else to fix their work.

Go home and check the receipt/contract and see what it says.

I had to take someone to small claims court because of this myself and WON!

They should stand behind the work they did and fix it.

Skylights always eventually leak. Get rid of them. A guy who works for me and a truck driver who regularly comes have always had problems with theirs. Sorry you have to deal with this.

Not if installed properly. If it's leaking, it's because it wasn't put in correctly.

JD,
I would call them up and have them come back REGARDLESS. That's their work that they did. Why not?

Re: Our Skylight is leaking

You are all right. We are trying to contact him now, but he isn't picking up. So we are sending him an email also with the pictures I took this morning. Hopefully he will do the right thing and bring his roofer back in and not charge us. I read the contract this morning and there was NO section on guarntees. Chat Icon That is our fault that we didn't look before we signed the contract.

Bari, I don't want to let this go with him. We had a big blow up with him at the end of our work, so I don't even know if he will contact us. Who knows. Can you tell me anything about your small claims court issue with a contractor. FM me with the details. Thanks Bari!

Send him an email and also fax that email to him. Even if it doesn't say anything about guarantees, you can still contest it. it's his work. Chat Icon

We just sent an email (two different email address we have) and they bounced back with "mailbox not found". Chat Icon His cell number doesn't have his voice on the voicemail system anymore either. Oh no, we are thinking they are out of business now. We are trying to see from a friend if they have new email info for him or not. keep your fingers crossed of us. Chat Icon

Re: Our Skylight is leaking

We had a similiar problem and it was caused by the roofing not being laid around the skylight properly. We had to replace half of the 5-year old roof.

As they age the seal around them becomes brittle and cracks. All skylights eventually leak.
Given that hers is less than a year old the previous should not be the problem, I would guess improper installation.

Not all. My parents have had theirs for 30 years and it has never leaked. (knock on wood). So not all do.

Re: Our Skylight is leaking

It's usually about the flashing around the skylight if they will leak or not. I hope you get a hold of the contractor who installed it and get him to make it right! He will probably just slap some Karnak on it for ya and call it a dayChat Icon

Re: Our Skylight is leaking

yeah the crazy part is that first our contractor told us that when we redo the roof the leak will go away. That was when we first bought the house and we knew the whole roof needed to be done. so we get the roof done and while the roofers are up there, they told our contractor that the seals on the old skylight weren't good and we should replace these skylights now before they finish the roofing, so that day the contractor went and got the new skylights and they put the new skylights in and finished the roofing all in one day. I can't believe 8 months later and now one of the two skylights is leaking. We haven't heard from the contractor yet and haven't received any new email address or phone number for him. He might have changed is name and number already for all we know. Hopefully not, but who knows. Keep your updated.

Re: Our Skylight is leaking - Updated

well we finally got a hold of our contractor and he is going to get a hold of the roofer that did the work. Hopefully we don't have too much damage to the interior between the walls. And we told him about a couple of other problems we had, so he is going to stop over. I'm not happy about having to deal with him again, but if it gets fixed right and not pay more money, we will be very happy. Keep your fingers crossed that he does the right thing by us! Chat Icon

what town do you live in? My dad is a roofer/general contractor.... if you're near where he works I could ask him if he'd stop by and tell you what's wrong w/ it. He owns his own company which my grandpa owned before him, so they've been around for a while.....

If you want to email me the pics, send me an FM and I can show them to him to see what he thinks... sometimes the problem isn't the area that you think it is......

Thanks Tricia! The roofer was supposed to come Saturday, but we never got a call. So we called our contractor again this morning and he is calling him again and also gave us his number. I think we are going to ask someone else to look at it after they fix it to see if it's all good. We need to try to save money, so if they can fix something that they did wrong or that went wrong in the last 8 months, then we are going to try them first. Chat Icon Very stressful after spending all that money with this contractor.
