Leaking Amniotic Fluid Question - sad post - warning

My coworkers daughter is 21 wks PG and went for her level II sono, it was determined that her amniotic fluid was dangerously low and after further tests they told her the baby did not have a bladder and some other vital organs and it's lungs had not developed. They are inducing her and she will have to deliver the baby, who will die within minutes of being born because the baby will not be able to breath on it's own. She is devesated... It's horrible.

My question is, HOW do you know if you're leaking amniotic fluid? Because I'm concerned now. Iknow that discharge can increase when PG and its totally normal, but how do you tell the difference between amniotic fluid and just regular PG discharge?

My coworkers daughter had been feeling the leak but thought it was normal and thought she was just sweating or wetter than usual.

Any advice?

That is just awful. Even if she had recognized what was happening I don't think anything could have been done.

If you are ever worried put on a pad and talk to your doctor, they can test the discharge.

Sorry about your friend's loss. Chat Icon

In her case, isn't the reason for the low fluid level that it's not being made in the first place?

How horrible! Chat Icon That is truly devastating. I was leaking fluid, but right at the very end. I had a feeling thats what it was, cause i was very damp down there. When i would go to the bathroom, my light days pad seemed wetter than normal but i wasnt sure if maybe i had leaked urine or was sweating. Turns out, i had small ruptures in the bag of water. The Dr. does a vaginal exam and can test to see if you are leaking. That is the reason i was induced. I would recommend anyone who suspects it to let the Dr. know. My heart goes out to your coworkers daughter Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am so sorry to hear this horrible news. Chat Icon

I am at 27 weeks and have discharge, I had my doctors appt this past saturday and she said that it looks normal and she took a culture. If it's something bad, I am sure I will hear from her.
If you feel like you have a heavy discharge, just ask your doctor to check it.

Re: Leaking Amniotic Fluid Question - sad post - warning

I called mr doctor's office and they said that normal discharge is more mucasy - but can be more watery too - she said if it's like water and there is a lot of it, call her. She also said that it's common for PG women to be very "wet" while pregnant, she isn't worrie dbc I just had my level 2 2 1/2 wks ago and my amnio levels are fine.

But I feel better - if anyone else is worried, just call your dr Chat Icon

Re: Leaking Amniotic Fluid Question - sad post - warning

I sent you FM. It sounds like her baby has what I lost my baby too. Triploidy. I am so so so sorry for her. Please read my FM and let her know she does have choices, she doesn't have to terminate the baby, the baby is not in any pain and will eventually terminate its own life. It makes me so sad to read this. My heart goes out to her. It is completely out of her control and if it is Triploidy, it is just a fluke of nature, nothing she could have done to prevent it.

Re: Leaking Amniotic Fluid Question - sad post - warning

Ugh... it always pains me to hear of someone losing something so precious.

Speaking from experience (I lost our boy at 16 wks in Feb '05), you KNOW when it's amniotic fluid. However, many are in denial about it... like me, for instance. I woke up very early that am because I was leaking fluids, and I brushed it off as urine (I guess cause I was half asleep). When I got up for work that morning, my underwear was drenched, but I still thought it was my bladder. After I went to work, and as I sat at my desk, there was no more denial, something was wrong, and I immediately went to the doctor's office. In turn, my negligence didn't cause the loss (because it was meant to happen that way, regardless), but it didn't help with the guilt.

SO, if you feel something that isn't ordinary, it's best to be safe than sorry... get it checked out.

FYI - what it feels like:
Unlike discharge, it's not at all clumpy and feels like urine, but is a lot clearer, and feels like it's coming from "somewhere else".
