Re: Organ Donation Poll

I am but i know my family would not support my decision - they truly believe that the doctors would "let me die" to use my organs.

No. I considered it at one point but have since rescinded over a friend of the family's situation. I won't go into it because I wouldn't want to change someone else's mind, but it changed my thinking.

Re: Organ Donation Poll

I am an organ donor.

My cousin received a pair of lungs from a 9 year old boy who passed in a car accident. She lived with those lungs for 6 wonderful years. Sadly, she lost her battle with Cystic Fibrosis while waiting for a 2nd transplant.

To those folks who think a doctor won't try to save you just to get your organs -

Organ referral is not like it's portrayed in Grey's Anatomy or ER where a young patient is on the verge of death and all the doctors mutually make the decision that, "she's young and she can help someone else. Let's pull the plug". You would have to be declared brain dead, in which there is no active life-sustaining brain activity going on and your breathing is being maintained by a ventilator. From there, your family would be consulted and asked if they would like to donate your organs. If they agree, your blood type and tissue type are sent to U.N.O.S. to see if you would be a sutable donor for anyone on their lists.
I hope that helps some understand a bit better about how it all works.
