Re: Organ Donation Poll

Absolutely. Without question.

If there were more organ donors in this world, maybe my father would have gotten the kidney transplant that he so desperately needed, and he would still be here with me as my daddy, and with my daugther as her grandpa Chat Icon

Re: Organ Donation Poll

Absolutely, I have been one for years and so is Vinny.

My sister hates that I am - she says she doesn't even want to think about it. It is nice that she says that but, in reality, if I'm dead what good are my organs? If I can help someone else or save someone else's life - there's no greater gift, IMO.

I am and so is my whole family. I just think it is amazing that you can save someones life like that.

I am also on a bone marrow list so that if I am a match I will donat my bone marrow to them.

Re: Organ Donation Poll

Years ago, when my brother was killed in an accident, it brought my family great comfort to know that his organs would help save the lives of others' loved ones. Now, just this past year my BIL was the recipient of a kidney and a pancreas, and has been given a second chance at life. Needless to say, I am an organ donor.

Re: Organ Donation Poll

I am not and neither is DH.

First of all, the idea really creeps me out. Second, I would do it only if I could chose who gets it and that's pretty much put of the question.

Yep, I am one.

My aunt's heart was donated to a teenage girl (and they were a rare match) and since then the girl has gone on to college, grad school to help the mentally handicapped and has written letters to my cousins, over time, telling them how her life has changed and how their mom's heart has helped her live a good life etc Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Nicest gift anyone could ask for.

that just gave me chills. how nice

Re: Organ Donation Poll

When I was younger, I used to think that I could do it, but not if they took my heart or my eyes. I don't really remember why I was attached to those parts, but I was. I soon realized, though, that any sort of attachment I have to those things in this life, I won't have when I die. I will be DEAD. I'm pretty sure, wherever I'm going, I won't need my organs and when I'm dead, I won't really care that I don't have these things.

(Previous posts just reminded me of this - this isn't a comment or criticism of ANYONE's choice.)

Re: Organ Donation Poll

I really don't believe that a doctor would not save you if he knew you were an organ donor.

I doubt the doctor at the ER (or any other doctor) would even know or discuss whether someone is an organ donor until they know nothing else can be done.

Second, even if he did know, why would that motivate him to not try to save your life? It's not like the doctor trying to save YOUR life is the doctor that is tending to whoever needs a specific organ transplant. Doctors don't get points or money for having the most organ donors. I would think most trauma specialists (or most doctors period) are most concerned with treating and saving their patients and are not at all concerned with whether or not someone is an organ donor.

Re: Organ Donation Poll

I am. Take it all.

I also have any understanding with my DH that if something were to happen to me that my life could be saved but my quality of life would be crap, I don't want to be saved. That might be a fight at the hospital since doctors are all about the saving.
I don't believe that doctors would let patients die just to get an organ.

Make sure to memorialize your wishes in a living will to avoid any "fights" at the hospital or among family members. Chat Icon

Re: Organ Donation Poll

I signed the back of my license to be an organ donor right after my father had his kidney transplant.

DH has a very difficult time with organ donation, and won't make the decision to do it. He respects my wishes though.
