Opinions needed please
Please read my email below -- and let me know what you think I am saying.....thanks...(B is DH)
"Hi All --
Saturday, April 22 is B's birthday. Last year was the big "4-0" but I was on bedrest so we didn't get to celebrate. 
Anyway I would like to take him for dinner on his birthday to West End Cafe in Carle Place - one of his favorite restaurants. I was hoping maybe a few close friends and family could join us, but I wouldn't tell him - so it would be a surprise dinner I guess.
Would you be able to join us? Please don't feel obligated....I know for some of you it is difficult to get here.......we'd just enjoy your company!!
Please just let me know by say April 19 so I can reserve a table. And remember, shhhhhhhh -- it's a surprise -- kinda!!"
So, does it seem like the whole dinner is on me, or that I would like them to come to dinner with us but pay their own way? TIA...

Me, too.
I would probably think that since you are throwing the party and formally inviting people, you are paying for it. But I would personally bring money just in case.

It made me wonder who was paying also, but it did seem more like you were footing the bill. If you wanted for everyone to chip in I would've worded it "Anyway I would like for all of us to take him for dinner on his birthday..." or something like that.

Thanks --- now I have to decide if I should stick with West End, which will run at least $50 pp, or change to somewhere less expensive.
DH is worth it but most of the family isn't, lol..!

I would assume we were paying for ourselves (since it's kind of an impromptu gathering and not really a planned party.) If it's a friend, we'd be happy to be there, regardless of who's paying.
But then again...you know what they say about "assume".

To me it sounds like an invite to a surprise party so I would be thinking you are paying.
But I would have money on me because I am out and would plan to buy a couple of rounds of drinks afterwards.

Me too. I would assume you are paying for a party for your DH. I would always bring money with me just in case.

I would not accept it. As someone else posted, it would put others on the spot if they interpreted the email differently. Also, people would probably be bringing gifts, I would.

I agree with Christine on both counts - it sounds like you are throwing a party, i.e. paying for it, but I'd bring $$ and would buy a round afterwards, and I wouldn't accept $$ from anyone.

OK thanks!! I will be taking care of the bill then, and maybe just move to somewhere a little less $$$$....but I will speak to the maitre'd on Wednesday to see if we can get a set menu.
