Opinions Needed - DD broke the nanny's phone..

DD broke the nanny's phone today ("dropped it by accident"). The phone is four years old and not a smart phone, just a basic old flip phone.

I, of course, told her I'd give her some money towards a new one in next week's check and she said thanks.

Question for you guys - How much should I give her? The old phone wasn't worth much, but she has to go through the expense/hassle of getting a new one.

On a deeper note, for conversation purposes....thoughts on this? - DH's first reaction was "why was she letting her have the phone?" and thought we would have every right to not offer her anything for it because she should keep her phone safe (but knows that isn't the right thing to do and agreed we should give her SOMETHING). He brought up the point "what if it was a $400 Iphone? Would we be responsible for that?"

Re: Opinions Needed - DD broke the nanny's phone..

It's a tough one. My DD broke my nanny's glasses. I think kids get to things and I never really thought "what was DD doing with them?" My guess is she picked her up and DD grabbed them off her face and broke them quickly. It's not hard for me to believe. I don't know how much they cost, but It happened right before the holidays. I ended up buying her a gift I knew she wanted, which cost me $80, in addition to the holiday week and a half off vacation in addition to 1 week bonus so I thought I did enough a the time! She ended up putting some crazy glue in them and I think she still wears the same pair! So to answer your question I didn't directly address it. IF it wasn't right before the holidays I think I would have given $100, and I think in your situation I'd add $100.

Now, I know someone whose DS wrote all over their dining room chairs with a pen and it is costing them $900 to replace. I'm not sure how I'd handle that. My kids run around everywhere but they shouldn't be alone with pens in my dining room!

I would give her a $100 like the above poster said and tell her to please not allow DD to ply with her phone because you dont want to go threw the trouble of having to replace it again.

I think its VERY nice of you to offer any money towards her phone.

My niece is a mothers helper for us a few hours a week and I told her NOT to let the boys play with her phone because A) they are FILTHY and full of germs and B) They are two and do not need to be held responsible with an expensive item that does not belong to them.

Since she is in charge, ultimately I would feel she is just as reponsible.

Just yesterday, she wore a WHITE, silkish shirt here. The first thing i said is, "HI have you MET your two year old cousins??? "
Come onnnnn they are toddlers what did you think would happen to her white pretty shirt. Sure enough, boogers all over it. I never ever offered to pay for cleaning bc in my eyes, she should have known better.Chat Icon

I think you should pay for the full replacement cost. That's what I would do if my DD broke anyone phone.

This. Although I do understand the point that the nanny was responsible and should not have allowed DD to touch the phone.. I would still ultimatly feel bad for nanny being out a phone... maybe bc I would just assume that replacing the phone would be a bigger financial burden on her than on DH and I. If that wouldnt be the case then I wouldnt feel as bad and may not offer to pay the replacement cost. By the way if she has had the phone for 4 years I am sure she is due for a free upgrade on it by her provider!

I would replace the broken item with a like item. If it were an older phone I wouldn't go out and get her a smart phone but would def buy or give her money so she could have one. I wouldn't really think about why she was letting my child play with it because kids can grab anything.

I would say $100 sounds good, although I really don't know how much it would cost to replace. I would also ask her not to let DD play with the new one.

This! I wouldn't ask her not to let DD play with the phone since you don't know if thats what happened. My DS grabs ppl's phone out of their pockets, pocketbooks, even out of my friends hands LOL. She may be offended if you jump the gun that she gave her the phone. I would probably check out verizon's website to judge how much her old phone was.

I think $100 should cover a non-smart phone from just about any carrier.

Tell her to keep her phone in a high up place such that your DD can't reach it.

$100 is a lot imo for a flip phone! Does she have insurance on it? If she does she probably gets a new phone for more liek $50

also I agree with you, she needs to take some responsibility- I tell my sister time and time again NOT to give my ds her iphone to play with- and I tell her if he breaks it, I'm not replacing it.

Sounds like she was well overdue for an upgrade after 4 years... It might have been a free phone to begin with. Money is tight around here and at the time it got broken she was the one watching him. I kinda feel like given those circumstances I wouldn't have initially offered to replace an old phone. I probably would have stewed on it for a little bit and had a conversation with her about free upgrades.

I would definitely compensate her for the phone. You don't know unless you ask her, whether she let your DD play with the phone or whether your DD got to it some way on her own. Why immediately assume (your DH in this case) that it was handed to your DD?

What if your DD broke your friend's phone? Wouldn't you offer to pay even if said friend had handed your DD the phone his/herself? I know I would. Just feel like people always have less consideration for nannies and such and would not react the same way if the same situation occurred with a friend/family.

I would offer to replace it. If she signs a new contract, she should be able to get one inexpensively.

I would not be comfortable buying her a new iphone if she did not have a smart phone previously.

eta: if it was an iphone, i would replace the iphone.

Our kids have yet to break other people's items but they've broken my phone 3 times and i'm pretty sure they accelerated the death of my laptop.

$100

But I'm with your hubby. Id damn well be asking HOW it is my daughter got a hold of a phone at all. She doesn't play with ours, ever (and she's now 4 and still doesn't). Why would the nanny need her phone out? I'm sorry but when I work my phone is put away and not looked at. I'm not paid to check my phone for calls or msgs. I'm paid to do my job. In her case that job is the care of your child.

Sorry... pet peeve for me is cell phone dependence. And he's right, what if it had been an iPhone? Then what?

Id make it clear to her this is the one and only and last time. She'd be well advised to keep it in a safer place going forward.

I was reading through the responses and originally I was thinking I would have offered her the money to replace the phone. But I think this is totally a valid point.

I'm sorry but this is an unrealistic statement. Nannies are human beings. They are allowed to check their phone, just like everybody else. Sometimes I read statements like this about what nannies/sitters should be "allowed" and I suspect the people writing them don't often spend a full day with a baby or toddler.

And furthermore, unless your job is paying you to proselytize on LIF, I wouldn't preach that much about having your phone put away Chat Icon Chat Icon

I totally agree. My nephew can grab my phone right out of my purse if I don't put it out of his reach, so you never know.

BUt that is different, the Nanny was in charge of the child. She was the one in charge of making sure the child doesn't get hurt and that the child doesn't hurt anything. WHen you are hanging out with your friend, you are in charge of your child.

I don't know if I would have offered anything honesty. I would feel badly for her but I would not feel responsible. I might offer to give her money towards a new dumb phone. If she want to upgrade that's on her.

I have to agree! It's VERY unrealistic to think that a nanny won't be using her phone during an entire day of watching a child. Most of the nannies i've seen at the local park use their phones to make calls or text etc..they are watching the kids as well, just the same as any mom who is watching her kids. They are human beings too!!

But I am online anyway :D My phone however is always put away and I dont have a child around me.

I dont get the Nanny has a life thing. Your life true. But maybe I dont get the point of a Nanny to begin with. I mean aren't they paid to care for your child or just 'watch over' them? Or let me put it this way.. I put them into the same catagory as my preschool/daycare. I would be livid to find them on their cell phones.

My first thought was exactly your DH's - why'd your kid have her phone?

I'd give her $50.
