I totally agree! I don't think that O&A should be fired or suspended, but this is a sad state of this country when these two DJ's just laugh at the thought of rape and don't have the balls to say - you know, that's just not right.
Maybe alongside evaluating free speech issues, we should see how we got so desensitized to such horror.

You know what offends me? Rape - actual rape. . . if I am watching the news and I see stories about molestation and murder - THAT offends me and sickens me. I can't even watch the news most of the time.
You know what DOESN'T offend me? An uneducated man making a comment about violence against a woman he will NEVER come into contact with. You know what ELSE doesn't offend me? Some stupid guys laughing at that man.
My work days are going to feel SO LONG now without O&A - at least I have the replays to listen to!
and i hope no one thinks that XM had some sudden moral epiphany about rape. . . censorship has nothing to do with morality and has everything to do with money.

It IS all and money and special interest groups' influence on big business. I guarantee this is not the first time people have made disgusting and offensive comments and yes they are offensive. It seems that every jock is under the gun and unless their shows are scripted from minute to minute and edited constantly, SOMEONE will always be offended by something. The next thing you know, there will be a special interest group offended by toenail clippings. Censorship is out of control.

the funny part is- suspending them- gives them even more attention and more people find out about it- same with the imus thing
how many people actually heard these things live- I think making a big deal about it- does more harm then good

You are right. Most people that are offended by them DON'T listen to them. Same as the people that were offended by IMUS. they dont listen - they jump on bandwagons and that scares me.

I completely agree with you. I've said it time and time again, as long as this stuff is tolerated by society as a whole and people find these type of things amusing or not such a big deal, women will continue to be degraded and abused.
I'm not saying they should have been fired and I do not agree with the reason they were suspended. However I am saying that a stand needs to be taken regarding what is acceptable and what isn't. I absolutely agree with you and say it all the time, it has to start with MEN stepping up and saying just what you suggested, "hey, that's just not right and I won't tolerate it".
Until such time, things will remain the same.

I dont know how many of you are old enough to remember Tipper Gore's fight with the PMRC. Did things get any better? I don't think so. As an adult, I would like to opportunity to choose what I listen to. Thank you very much.

I just want to clarify my take on this whole thing. I am in no way advocating for censorship nor do I feel that our first ammendment right should be infringed upon.
I do not agree with the decision made by the station in this case and I didn't agree with it in the Imus case either. My anger stems from the overall lack of respect shown to women in the media; on the radio, television, movies, etc. IMO, society has found this acceptable and it is evidenced in the countless numbers of women who are brutalized every day by both strangers and intimate partners who face no real consequences for their actions unless the case results in a murder. It is further evidenced by the way rape victims are treated by the system.
So, I went a bit off topic here but felt the need to express where I'm coming from.

I said this the other day and I say it again.
Small interest groups are suddenly able to get a "shock jock" fired and that is wrong.
Imus said nothing more or less than he has said before about many different ethnic groups. But Al Sharpton made a big deal out of it and he got fired.
JV and Elvis had a six year old tape played while on vacation mocking an Asian restaurant and a Japanese group made a big deal out of it and they got fired. (BTW, JV's wife is Asian)
Now, O & A have a homeless guy on and make fun of his comments and they get "suspended".
C'mon, how many have even listened to that bit? The word rape was never even used.
Censorship is totally out of control, it really frightens me.
Newspapers print only what they want you to know and skew everything the way they want, but nobodys screaming about that. Instead, people are worried about two guys on the radio.

Any company has the right to do whatever they want (within legal limits) regarding the status of employment of their employees. What ticks me off is that the deadly combination of corporate power, along with the renewed push toward conservativism in this country is very slowly and not so subtly stripping us of our ability to make our own choices and FOR OURSELVES what we find funny, poignant, offensive, etc; and completely removing OUR POWER to control the market by making our own choices to tune them out.
It is frightening, and it is truly against what the point of the media is about. Sure there are some who will abuse the public airwaves/print, but for the most part the media exists to exchange ideas that bring about change. Change leads to societal evolution, which we cannot live without.
I personally am outraged by this, as well as the Imus deal. And I am more offended that people are hurt by random words, rather than offended by the news and newsmedia who, in both cases, propagated the words to the general public.
I agree that I am insulted in general by the blatant disregard against women, but do you really believe that suspending O&A will draw any POSITIVE attention to women's rights?

I don't understand, I personally like shock jock radio myself because I can't stand the G rated crap on WBLI, etc. If I had children, I wouldn't listen to it, but when I'm by myself, I enjoy it. I'm not saying what the guest said was "right" and personally I would not have listened to that- I would have turned it off BUT
This lack of Freedom of Speech and this "punishing" some and not others- Some things are OK to say and some are not is out of control.
Freedom of Speech is exactly that-- Free... NOT "let's have Free Speech when we say so and when we don't want it- we'll suspend people". It's a slippery slope and I've said it before-- How soon before we are living like the people in Singapore?
Again, the comments were not something I would ever say or agree with BUT Freedom of Speech allows them the right to say it-- If people don't like it then they have to just turn it off and learn to suck it up!
Otherwise, Singapore here we come!
This is not a freedom of speech issue. The first amendment prohibits the government from restricting speech. A radio station is not the government. As a private employer, the radio station can censor speech as well as punish and fire employees for their comments.
The employers really need to define the fine line. The stations shouldn't encourage these personalities to be shocking, and then turn around and punish them for doing exactly what the stations wanted. If the stations want them to be controversial, the stations should set some type of ground rules.

The fact that the joke was funny or not funny should have nothing to do with their ability to exercise their free speech - so why do you agree that they should have been suspended? Because they made a joke you didn't think was funny?

Let's be honest here, the ONLY reason XM suspended them is so that they can look good in front of congress for the proposed merger. If the merger weren't on the table, XM would be touting the fact that they are on a channel that is listed as explicit and can be blocked on any xm radio unit, that XM is free from FCC oversight, etc.
Whether or not you agree with it, at the end of the day O&A did their job. They were hired to talk about things in a way that are shocking and get people talking.
