i agree with the suspension - i never felt they should be fired over what they said, but they should be reprimanded for making light of rape. nothing funny about it - EVEN on satellite radio.
i DON'T however agree with WHY XM has handed them this suspension...
The remarks could become an issue as XM seeks approval from the Federal Communications Commission to merge with New York-based Sirius Satellite Radio, said Tom Taylor, editor of the trade magazine Inside Radio.
"XM and Sirius don't want any regulation," he said in Friday's New York Daily News. "But it's come up in four congressional hearings -- and at this point, the merger is such a close call, any issue could become important."
So, in other words, to 'save face', let's suspend them so it looks good to the FCC and we get approval for the merger.

According to XM, the reason they were suspended was not because of the comment itself.
From Orbitcast.com:
XM stated that comments made on yesterday's O&A show "put into question whether they appreciate the seriousness of the matter" as their reason for suspending Opie and Anthony.

Here we go again.
I'm not saying what the guest said was "right" and personally I would not have listened to that- I would have turned it off BUT
This lack of Freedom of Speech and this "punishing" some and not others- Some things are OK to say and some are not is out of control.
Freedom of Speech is exactly that-- Free... NOT "let's have Free Speech when we say so and when we don't want it- we'll suspend people". It's a slippery slope and I've said it before-- How soon before we are living like the people in Singapore?
Again, the comments were not something I would ever say or agree with BUT Freedom of Speech allows them the right to say it-- If people don't like it then they have to just turn it off and learn to suck it up!
Otherwise, Singapore here we come!

I agree, it's disgusting and there's NO excuse for it... but it does fall under Freedom of Speech so the only way we can really hurt them is simply not to listen- they get money from ratings being high and them staying employed.

I really don't see what the big deal is. 
If you are offended by what they say then don't listen.
I do get why XM has the right to suspend them though freedom of speech does not apply to your employees. You can not get in trouble thur the gov't fro what you say on satellite radio, but your employer can suspend you if they want to for chewing gum on the air, that is ther perogative. I will just never get suspending a shock jock for saying something shocking is moronic.

THANK YOU FOR SAYING THIS! If you don't like it, change the station. I don't understand, I personally like shock jock radio myself because I can't stand the G rated crap on WBLI, etc. If I had children, I wouldn't listen to it, but when I'm by myself, I enjoy it. Tell it like it, stop sugar coating it.

i understand that...Free Will is why i DON'T listen - but the fact that people are sooo desensitized to something so horrific as rape, and don't get offended by it (especially women) - well, as i said, it's just scary to me.

just a thought - but do you think the homeless man really knew what he was saying? I mean- he admitted to be living on the street since 1995 or 96
he has substance abuse issues- do you think he even knows who Condi Rice is?

That's fine that you have that opinion. But that opinion should be related to TV, Radio, and society in general. People's free speech should not be stopped because you are scared of the people that might agree with it.
I'm an athiest, but I'm not scared of people that are religious. I disagree with them totally, but I don't stop and close church doors and stop other methods they use to spread their word. I think they still have the right to speak about what they believe.

Our society's general awareness and sensitivity is horrible. In this shock jock, Tony Soprano killing, pornography loving nation, there are lots of people that find things amusing that 20 years ago would be considered taboo.
The fact that the joke was funny or not funny should have nothing to do with their ability to exercise their free speech - so why do you agree that they should have been suspended? Because they made a joke you didn't think was funny?
