Going to the wedding for a distant cousin in MA. Family of 4-kids are under 5. What would you give and please don't respond with "give what you can afford" since its really not helpful. Thanks.

I would give $500 to my cousin. A distant cousin maybe less since the wedding is OOS, and you have travel expenses. Plus people OOS tend to give less.
I hate to say it but did this cousin come to your wedding? What did they give you?

$200, kids are probably free, it’s a distant cousin so I’m assuming your not close and you have travel expenses. Probably can do less

I'm thinking less too as well especially since we were asked what we are eating on the invite. She did come to my wedding but that was 8 years ago and she was only 20 at the time and in college. Normally I would return what was given.

Haven't seen or spoken to them since I got married 8 years ago. Husband said $500 and I say absolutely not.

From my not so distant cousin who had to travel from MD to my wedding, I received $25. Expectations are much different OOS. $100-$200 would most likely be appropriate.

I would not travel to MA with 2 small children for the wedding of a distant cousin I hadn’t seen in 8 years.

But since you’re going,I’d give $300.

Re: OOS Wedding

I pretty much give a standard $150-$200 (for two adults) depending on who it is and where it is. If we are closer, I go on the high end, if we aren't close I go on the lower end. If I needed to pay travel and hotels and what not, I go lower end. If it was pretty simple to be there, I go on the higher end. Based on how people respond here, this is ridiculously low, but based on what I got during my wedding, I'm a high roller. Most people gave us $0 and didn't even give a card. No one gave us over $100 per person person. Not even my richest, closest family members.

Genuinely curious- what do you think the reason was for family/friends not giving you a wedding gift or giving you a very small wedding gift? protesting the wedding? couldn't afford it? second marriage? just really curious. We had a couple of peop[le attend our wedding without so much as a card and I was baffled at those few.

To OP: I think 300 is right on!

Re: OOS Wedding

I usually give $200 for two people. $50 for each kid sounds good, but I would consider giving $250. You are not going to see these people for years. Boom, bam, hands wiped clean and done.

Yes, I have honestly never heard of anyone not giving a gift. If I were unable to give a gift I wouldn’t go to the wedding.

Re: OOS Wedding

An OOS wedding in MA? I would give between $200-$300 depending on your relationship. Their weddings are not nearly as expensive as ours (Unless its a suburb of Boston or the Cape) and you are very likely going to have a cash bar and they do not give gifts like we do.

$50. This was the standard of anyone who came to my wedding who lived OOS. Speaking to friends this was a common amount.
