Online schooling
What are your thoughts on attending college online? Do you think companies and businesses look at the degree the same as if you physically went to the school?

Re: Online schooling
i honestly considered it because it was going to save me time and allow me to get my degree and still spend time with my daughter, but it was going to be too much money so i opted to just go to my old college and finish there.
I believe that there are lots of reputable online programs and i don't think a future employer would look bad upon that.

Re: Online schooling
I hope so - I am about to start my first semester of school at SUNY's Empire State College Center for Distance Learning. It's fully accredited and they do have a physical campus upstate with a few satellite locations in the area.
So many things are done electronically these days that I am hoping businesses will not think less of people that earned their degree this way.

Re: Online schooling
i think it depends on the school. SUNY is a reputable organization so i don't think it sohuld be a problem.
in fact, i have had friends that have taken on-line courses and they say they're so much harder than actually being in class because you have to really participate in the on-line discussion and your papers and asisgnments are a lot more in depth.
GOOD LUCK!

If you are worried about how companies view the degree, go to an online program for a school with a physical campus--the transcripts generally do not note that the classes were taken online. www.sln.suny.edu lists all of the online SUNY courses and degrees--an excellent resource, and cheaper than options like U. Phoenix.

Re: Online schooling
For part of my degree, I used a school that is through SUNY and has home/online options. Depends which career but overall most careers will just note that you have a college degree.

Re: Online schooling
If you do it through an accredited school, the degree should be weighed the same as if you took on-site classes. I agree with the poster who recommended taking online classes from a school that also has a physical campus.

Re: Online schooling
DH got his MBA from Marist online. On his resume, I don't think he says anything about getting it online.

Re: Online schooling
I got my Master's online. And my degree looks no different than had I obtained it through a "brick and mortar" school. I don't mention it was an online program on my resume, I just name the school if they ask about it then I'll elaborate.

Re: Online schooling
Dh is working on his MPA online with Marist College.
He says it's actually harder than being in a real class, because the classes are accelerated, there's a lot of reading and "class participation" online with your work groups.
He does find it frustrating when working on a group project and not everyone contributes their section on time.

Re: Online schooling
I am taking my Masters degree distance learning. The school is accredited and is a physical campus with students taking the same program as me at the actual school. (University of Concinatti). The program is one of the best in the country and there are not many of this program, so the school began offering the distance learning option. I "attend" the same exact classes as the in-class students. (The classes are videotaped and are viewable online). The professors are well known and respected in the industry and like I said the program is well known and respected. So in my case I do not think it is looked down upon. And my degree would be the same as if I took the program in person - it does not indicate distance learning. Although it would be obvious on my resume because I am attending this school in Cincinatti at the same time as working on Long Island. Other programs (that I see advertised online) look shady to me. Just do your research first before enrolling!

Re: Online schooling
I am going to SUNY Empire College. It is a fully acredited school. When I get my BS Degree it will not say online school on it. It will be a regular degree.
