Ok, can we talk weight gain for a second?

I have my 24 week appointment tonight, so I decided to weigh myself. Before this appointment, I gained 7 lbs the whole pregnancy.

....I gained 7 lbs the last month! I'm mortified! I mean, I knew I wasn't eating the greatest, but for some reason, I am still shocked! Did anyone else have this? I really don't want to gain more then 25-30 lbs the whole pregnancy, but I feel like I'm going to gain a million!

Ugh, so frustrated! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Uhhh I'm 18wks and as of a few weeks ago I was already up 15lbs, I haven't weighed myself since them because I figured it doesn't matter. I'm trying to make healthy choices and eating what I'm supposed to so the number is out of my control anyway.

7lbs for the point you're at isn't a lot at all!Chat Icon

Re: Ok, can we talk weight gain for a second?

I started my pregnancy underweight so I knew that I would need to gain more than the average. However, at my 24 week appointment I was up 37 lbs. Between week 20-24 I gained 9 pounds! I wanted to cry! I kicked up my activity level and continued to eat well and at the next appointment i had lost a pound. I'm learning to try to not stress about this as I think your body willd o what it needs to do!

On average, my doc said that people gain 10 pounds during the first 20 weeks and then one pound every week after for a total of 30. I've been using that as my guidepost of whether or not I'm overdoing it. Using that logic, you are right on schedule!

I think there's just such a big range of normal because everyone's body starts out at different places and some need to gain more, others less. I know I've gained more than the average by now but I was small to start and my drs haven't said one word about it! I just figure as long as I'm not sitting around eating bonbons all day then I'm doing what I should be doing.Chat Icon Chat Icon

THere is a huge range and if your Dr isn't concerned then neither should you. ALso it isnot true for everyone that they gain most at the end. I gained most of mine in the first 20 weeks and then very little from there.

IMO you can't control it. Your body will gain what it needs and you can eat great or horrible and it has little change on that.

I am 26 weeks and gained over 30lbs! I gained 8 lbs between my last 2 appointments! My doc did say something to me but I think thats because of my total. I gained 56 lbs with my DD so I am not suprised by this but its not fun. She told me to lay off the ccarbs because I was eating 2-3 bowls of cereal a day. I don't think you have gained too much weight at all!!!!

I lost weight and was at my starting weight at my 16 week appt. I gained 9.5 lbs between 16 weeks and 20 weeks. I was thrilled! I never lost weight while pregnant and was so unhappy about that. I'm going for a 9 lb'er this time!

I'm in my 35th week now and have gained 40lbs already! I was not overweight to begin with and its really all belly, so i'm not too concerned. We'll see what my dr has to say about it tomorrow, but she's never mentioned weight to me in all 35 weeks. I've been gaining steadily each appt.

Don't worry!

That happened to me this month too. I gained 8 lbs my whole pregnancy and when I went for my 25 week appt, I was up another 8 lbs...so 16 lbs in total. They told me I was right on track and that is supposed to happen around this time since baby is doubling in weight. I don't want to gain more then 25-35 lbs so I'm watching what I eat now. I was down 12 lbs in the beginning of the pregnancy so I'm happy to know that I've caught up and baby is getting what he needs.

I gained so much in the beginning b/c all I ate were carbs! I'm just over 39 weeks now and have gained 32 pounds. I gained a bit more with first DC b/c I had such massive swelling.

Re: Ok, can we talk weight gain for a second?

Same thing happened to me, I was losing weight at first then started to gain gradually, at my 28 week appointment I shot up to 200lbs, I was mortified, my goal was to not reach 200, well, DH reminded me that I was wearing a sweater and sneakers and that it was 5pm so of course i weighed more. At my 30 week appointment i lost 3 lbs, down to 197....I know I'll be over 200 again ext week at me 32 week appointment but hey the baby is finally growing and I look pregnant now, so of course I'm gaining weight now....

Some months you will gain more than others. You don't sound like you are off track or gaining too much. Your doctor will say something if he/she is worried. People that start underweight have to gain more and if you were overweight to begin they don't want you to gain a ton.

As long as you are eating healthy and the babies are doing well, you cannot worry. Your body will tell you if you are hungry and you should eat.

With DS I gained 20 something lbs. This time I am pregnant with twins so I know I will gain a lot more. Of course I cringe when I get on the scale at the dr. but I know my body is just doing what it needs to do to carry healthy babies.

As women, I think it is really tough to see the scale creeping up! It will go away after your LO is born. Chat Icon

I'm 31 weeks now and I've already gained 41 pounds. I feel like that is a lot, but I was also small to begin with and when I mentioned the weight gain to my doctor he was not even the least bit concerned. I had also gained a lot in the middle of my second trimester. I am all belly as well, but let me tell you, I am feeling every pound! I"m sure I will gain at least another 5-10 pounds between now and 40 weeks. I'm sure it's fine. Everyone gains differently.

I think the not sitting around eating bon bons is key. If you are eating junk food, then the weight gain isn't healthy weight gain. But if you are eating right, then your body is gaining what it needs to.

Don't worry about the numbers as much as if you are being active and making healthy food choices.

I agree with everything you say but you can eat great or horrible and has little change. Last pregnancy I ate horrible, and gained a ton of unhealthy weight. I didn't feel good, I didn't look good and it took me a LONG time to lose the weight.

This time i am eating right, remaining active, i am not putting on as much weight, my body feels better, and I can pretty much guarantee I won't have as hard of a time losing it.

You should gain weight, but pregnancy also shouldn't be used as an excuse to eat excessively or poorly, because sometimes, like for me, the weight doesnt just fall off when you give birth.

In my opinion the body puts on what it needs when you are eating nutritious food (of course with some treats in there as well Chat Icon )

To OP I am not saying you are eating poorly, or excessively, i was just commenting on PP comment Chat Icon

This is what I always hear and I think some women can make weight gain too much of a focus during pregnancy. It all comes down to whether or not the DR's are concerned. Your body will do what it wants and now is not the time to try to control it. Although I haven't gained anything yet in 11 weeks, I am fully prepared and expecting to gain weight, and I refuse to worry or get upset about Chat Icon

Ladies, I said on average. I was also trying to make OP feel ok about the weight she has gained. I disagree that eating great or horrible has little change on your body. You can most certainly control the weight you gain during pregnancy but it doesn't sound as if the OP has done anything that would warrant worrying yet. Sometimes we gain more in certain months than others, but consistent bad eating habits will have you putting on the pounds fast!

I went to the obgyn this past Friday, 21w5d, and my total weight gain is 20 lbs so far. I had been doing ok until a 3 week business trip in February. I gained 7 lbs!! Chat Icon The dr had no issues when I went in last week. He said my weight is fine. But when I saw the NP after my work trip she mentioned the increased weight gain over a short period. Chat Icon

My problem is that I travel a lot for work so I eat every meal out. Not the best when you're pregnant and trying to not eat too badly. I also don't eat the best when I'm home, so I need to start doing better of thinking as things as treats and indulgences and not daily habits.

I still have a ways to go so I'm going to try and eat ok and I hope I don't pack on too much weight.

I completely agree. I gained 53 lbs. The first 7 months I watched what I ate, and worked out 3 times a week, plus 1 time a week with my trainer. In my mind, I only wanted to gain 25 lbs. By the 7 month I was up about 40lbs and was so frustrated because I did everythibg in my power to not gain a lot of weigh... it didn't help. The last two months I said "F it" , and ate what I wanted. You body will do what it wants and what it needs to.

We are all different heights, weights, body types, etc. so I truly believe that those weight "guidelines" are BS. I am about to pop and I gained over 55 pounds. My chest grew from a 32 to a 38, my fingers swelled from a size 5 to a 7.5. I absolutely do not believe this is because of something I did wrong. It's hormonal! My Dr. and the nurses say I look great and am healthy. That is all that matters. Chat Icon
