Oh, Hi..... you
Is anyone else horrible with names? Even people that I work with on occasion, I can't remember their names (luckily, we have badges, so I keep sneaking glances at their badge... ). I'll often have people email me, so I get their name that way. I remember faces pretty well (if I've seen them in real-life), sequences of numbers (phone, SS#, addresses, etc), what cars people own, directions, etc. Just not names.
BTW, if anyone happens to see him in the "real world", please don't be offended if I don't recognize you, or remember your name....
I've known people (former VP of HR for instance) that knows details about everyone. They would see you in the hall once every few months, and ask questions about something you discussed last time, not just your name. I wish I could do that...

Re: Oh, Hi..... you
I am one of those freaks who remembers EVERYONES name. All my friends can't believe that I can remember the name of someone that I met once 3 years ago. Its because I would be mortified if I ran into someone and had to ask them their name again, and to be honest, if its someone I see alot (say someone at a babygroup or something) you reach that point of no return where you can't ask them their name now. Its too late...
So I remember names, I make the effort to.

Re: Oh, Hi..... you
I'm the worst when I see my students out in the "real world". They could have been in my class for three years straight but if I see them at a restaurant, store, etc., I completely draw a blank
I ran into one of my h.s. teachers last week (He was awesome) at a store. I called his name and immediately said mine and the year I graduated. I mean he taught for 40 years and I graduated 19 years ago, I'd be shocked if he remembered.

Re: Oh, Hi..... you
I'm really bad with remember names. I'm trying to get into the habbit of saying their name back to them after I've been introduced, like...
"Kim, this is Tom"
"Tom, it's great to meet you!"
I usually forget to do this, but when I have, I usually remember their name a little bit better.

I have a double whammy. Can't remember names or faces. I will hold entire conversations with people and, when they leave, wonder who the heck that was. People wave to me and I wave back not knowing who the person is. I've been this way my whole life. Oh, well.

Re: Oh, Hi..... you
Im pretty good with remembering names. I even remember foreign names pretty well, and how to spell and pronounce them perfectly
I love spelling, it just intrigues me (foreign names) I always ask how to spell a name if its a completely foreign name Ive never heard of. and ask the meaning of the name.
now I write in "chat lingo" Here, because "I wanna"
and Ive always had friends/coworkers of other cultures shocked that I say names as if I were fluent in their language.
Lately, my forgetfulness in general has carried on to forgetting names a bit, , but for the most part, I remember names, and a NUT for remembering phone numbers even if I never dialed them before (and when I was younger, had fun remembering license plates numbers of all family members, my unlces in Italy thought I was nuts a year later reciting their plates )
If I forget someone's name and have to introduce smeone else, I'll introduce the person that's with me "Hey guys, this is my sister Lucy" and the rest falls into place

Overall I am pretty good with names and faces. Sometimes if I forget a name and DH is with me and he has not met the person yet, DH introduces himself to the person and I will get the name that way.

I really try very hard to remember names. I think it shows a good deal of respect to be able to recall a name. It indicates that you think someone is important enough to remember. Sometimes I draw a blank - and it makes me feel AWFUL.

Re: Oh, Hi..... you
Not good with names. Especially if I'm meeting someone in passing and don't think I'll ever see them again. I could walk away, and 30 seconds later not recall their name.
I can't remember names of people from High School either. They "might" look familiar, but I can't place where they are from...high school, undergrad, graduate school, did I work with them? if so, what company....
I probably come off so snobby and stuck up because I walk the other way if I see someone from 15 years ago and can't remember their name!

Re: Oh, Hi..... you
I am HORRIBLE with names. I just blank out. I think it's because I get nervous meeting new people, so I am so worried about introducing myself and making a decent first impression, that I just space out when they say their name. So when they walk away, I have no idea what their name is. But I remember faces. If I met you once, I will remember that I met you. Just not your name.
Not like those people who have met you before (and more than once) and they say "Nice to meet you".

Re: Oh, Hi..... you
I used to be absolutely great with them - now I'm horrible with names & faces.
Everyone looks familiar to me. I look at them & think "Did I go to high school with you? college? Did I see you at an event? Did I take pictures of your kid?"
If I know that I know them, then I wrack my brain for their name.
DH & I have a system for finding out names when the other has forgotten. We pretend the other is a clod & introduce ourself.

Re: Oh, Hi..... you
I'm okay, borderline bad.
Some names I remember easily. Others I easily forget. DH is great with names / people at work and awful with all other names. It's like he's selective about it. He knows all the guys from work / other companies, etc... but I guarantee you he will ask me 100 times what our new neighbors' names are before he remembers.
I can't blame him, though, as I'm not great with names either. I'm especially awful if I'm at a party or something and meet a bunch of people at one time.

Re: Oh, Hi..... you
I'm usually pretty good remembering people's names. But sometimes I run into someone I haven't seen in ages and I have a hard time, and I feel bad bc they know exactly who I am. Tho that's usually bc they look different, and of course I haven't changed at all!!

I have the same problem!
I seriously have the same face I did when I was 5. I think anyone who knew me in nursery school and saw my nursery school pic would know who I am. Some people's faces seem to really change as they get older -- but apparently I still look the same.
(Either that or just everyone in the world is better at remembering me than I am at remembering them!)

I used to be absolutely great with them - now I'm horrible with names & faces.
I used to be great too. I think it's a job requirement for HR folks.
HOWEVER, since having the baby I think the "name remembering" part of my brain has been dormant.

That's why I ask people their extension so I can dial it & see their name before they get back to their desk.
