Obama supporters...I have a question?

I was dissapointed that McCain lost. But that was it, dissapointed. But now these threads have me freakin TERRIFIED!!!! I never even THOUGHT to be afraid of Obama! I just don't agree with his policies. Why are people so afraid? I see posts saying good bye to America? Ummm what?? Am I missing something? I'm asking Obama supporters because I know that you will rationally help me see why I shouldn't be sitting here thinking of America's demise!!! Chat Icon

Re: Obama supporters...I have a question?

in every election things go from polite discord and disagreement and escalate to rhetoric until they reach unabashed spin.

GOP followers tend to believe GOP spin, as dems believe dem spin. McCain was saying some pretty extreme stuff (really stretching the truth... sometimes boldfaced lies... sometimes attempting to elicit terror) regarding Obama's economic and other policies...

ex. he's affiliated with terrorists and is muslim, he's not even born in the US, he's a socialist, he's a communist.... it goes on and on.

if you believe that stuff, it IS scary.

At work this is one of the reasons some known republicans voted for Obama--they lost respect for McCain--one of them after his speech just now on the phone said--now if only this was the McCain that campainged.

Re: Obama supporters...I have a question?

I knew the 'old McCain' would come back if he lost.... too bad he didn't stick to his guns throughout the process... (except I think he might not have won the nomination becuase he tends to be too centrist)

Re: Obama supporters...I have a question?

agree with everything people have said already:

ignorance of how things really work.
ignorance or an unwillingness to understand differences.
and "spin" tactics that try to morph something that is nothing into something that is huge.

Don't be afraid with an Obama-Biden Administration. Putting on the "politico" hat right now, they will have to govern to the center, and there are not going to be things done to intentionally weaken our nation, or allow for bad things to happen. I predict that Obama will be much closer to a Bill Clinton, Third Way-type of politician. He won't be able to get anything done without being moderate, so if someone says that Obama is going to pander to "terrorists" or "communists" or that the nation is on its way to "Socialism" that is their fear talking and frankly, in my opinion, they haven't taken the time to really educate themselves on the policies and the processes of how our Government works.

Re: Obama supporters...I have a question?

ignorance. people who believe all the propaganda out there are the ones who are all dramatic and resort to using such words as fear.

for example my coworkers daughter voted mccain because they feel if obama is president we will be bombed by terrorists. its silly things like that that spread fear to people who dont know better.

That's not true - there are concerns over policies.

Honestly - to call people ignorant is name calling and ignorant as well. What I find most sad is the name calling on these threads. While I think the "historical" aspect of his winning is a good thing in the sense of the first black president... instead of using the word "scared" I will use the words: I have concerns about policies (i.e. healthcare, economy, etc.). While I'm not saying Bush did a good job with the economy (and it's not Bush that I voted for in this election anyway), I'm just not convinced Obama's policies will be in the best interest of our country. I hope I'm wrong, but who really knows. Please though - the name calling just makes the postings seem childish and as if people have to defend themselves by putting other's down.

Edited to add: maybe instead it would be helpful if those who supported Obama would post their reasons for doing so - other than the token: because "it's time for change" - be more specific about how you feel we will be a better America. Maybe this will eliviate fears moreso than calling someone ignorant. I can only speak for myself, but I didn't not vote for the man b/c of his race... I didn't support his policies. So insightful responses would be a breath of fresh air.

the majority of the posts we have seen this evening have been ignorant and devoid of the well thought out kind of response you just gave above. what we were referring to as "ignorant" were the "Obama is going to take this country to he1l in a hand basket" comments, or that he preaches Socialism.

If only we could have had debates about the policies at stake, perhaps we wouldn't have devolved into needless name calling and having other posters use verbiage to call others various forms of algae.

good post - it is weird asking obama supporters this question, but at the same time hard to get an answer from mccain supporters b/c of what you have previously heard. I think a major group of mccain supporters are "scared" of being killed by taxes. That is my fear. I am not literally scared, but use it as a figure of speech.

Great post. And I don't think this is what heathergirl meant by ignorance - you are clearly saying you have concerns about his policies and that's absolutely fair. It's the people that post God help us! Our society and our government as we know it will be lost forever! It's just scaremongering and just not rational.

To answer your question, I supported Obama because I agree with his policies - on healthcare, on the war, on abortion, on the environment. I think McCain would've made a fine president, but I voted for Obama because beyond the fact that I agree with his political stance I feel that he has a natural talent for diplomacy and for dealing with people in a fair, balanced, calming way. Those are the qualities I want to see in my president and those are the qualities I think will help the US move forward in every issue on the agenda.

It's not BS. When people push it into your mind that you should be afraid...that you should be fearful and that you should pack your bags and move...that's hate and fear. I'm sorry, but I don't see this man as a dictator. I see him as an inspiration. Only time will tell of course. But when people call him a terrorist or are wary b/c he could be a Muslim or are denying him a vote b/c he's black, which is what a lot of people did over the course of this campaign (and I'm not necessarily talking about this board), well, that's hate and fear and again, it comes from years in the making. Sometimes people are afraid of the change that will inevitbly come and use THAT fear to propegate rumors that cause new fear.

As for Obama's 'friends'...well, I'm more afraid of Bush's ties and the pockets he dipped into.

Re: Obama supporters...I have a question?

I wanted Obama but when I woke up this morning, I was a little afraid too. Not a bad fear just felt a little "weird".

Honestly, I think people fear change. It is human nature. People like us are afraid because these policies will be in place for the next 8 years, most likely. Most of us are about to have or currently have younger children. There is a lot on the line in this election, especially for us.

After 9/11, Bushes war was immediately in place. I don't know what it is to live without this war. That will stop immediately under Obama. I don't know what it means to bring our troops back. I worry about other countries arming. I don't know how much I am going to have to re-budget in this economy under the new tax laws. I don't know how my parents social security is going to be affected....

It is just a frightening time regardless and change at first is always a little hard. I really don't care who the president is.... I just want to live a long life with my babies. If Obama can sustain me, I am thrilled.

Re: Obama supporters...I have a question?

I completely understand being wary of his policies- I am too, that's why I voted McCain! I was talking more about the people who are convinced our country is doomed and we are all going to become some socialist, horrible country. Many of his policies that are EXTREMELY to the left- will probably not pass in that form anyway. Maybe a version of it, but remember, even many democrats in congress are not as liberal as Obama. I asked Obama supporters this because the few sour apples in the McCain camp were the ones who scared the cr*p out of me, and I was looking for some reassurance.
And if he is really THAT bad...we'll just vote him out in 4 years. There is no guarantee he will have an 8 yr. term. Chat Icon
