talk about property tax along with our high income tax and I wonder why we live here. Schools have gone downhill. It's crowded. The infrastructure is falling apart.

I would leave if my kids weren't so ingrained in the schools/community. I had to switch schools even younger than my kids are now and it's tough. Plus my son is in a special program at school that I like. Ultimately I have made the choice to stay until my kids are out of school but I think once they are out of the house I will spend little to no time here.

Same. I don't' want to do that to my DD who is about to start middle school and is very ingrained with her friends etc.
Once she is done with HS- we are most likely gone.
If we didn't have DD we'd have been gone already I think. Especially now that I'm remote at work- I can be remote anywhere.
The taxes are getting out of hand. And I wouldn't even mind them so much if we got something for them- but like OP said- everything is going down hill.
We can't even get a major highway like the LIE paved. It's down right dangerous to drive on.
Something has to give. It's becoming unlivable here.

I am in the same mindset.
I think it would be too disruptive to move to another part of the country. I'm not even sure I want to stay in the country but that is another subject.

I plan on moving out of state in a few years, too. After DC are at least out of high school. It's not even the taxes that are the main issue for me. I really want to have 30 to 50 or more acres of woods to live on, and there's obviously no way to do that on LI.

I was actually thinking the same this morning - I wouldn't mind moving out of the states. I love the Caribbean and think I could be very happy on some of the islands. Just such a more relaxed way of life.

I would leave but my children would be devastated. There is no way I want them to go to college or start their adult life here. They agreed they want to go to college somewhere with no snow. Fingers crossed they stay close to each other. But we are counting down.

OMG...me too. I need to stop watching the House Hunters International, or Beach Hunters. It makes me want to move now.

DH wants to leave but his timing of when he wants to leave doesn't line up with when it would be good for the kids to leave so I've pushed back.

The end of next school year is our last potential opportunity before the kids get too old.

Our kids are still little and we’re always talking about leaving. We are looking at Nashville, Austin and a few locations on the East Coast to relocate. DH would need to find a position and my job will let me work from anywhere. I would be sad to leave the place I consider home but NY is on a bad path and we refuse to support that path by paying the taxes.

For what it’s worth, a lot of people seem to rave about moving to Nashville and Tenn over all.

Austin is the tech capital of TX plus it's surrounded by universities if you have some academia propensity for work. It's expensive though. There is no state income tax like TN but I don't know if there are other, ancillary taxes.

If it makes you feel better, those shows are fake. They have usually found the place they live in months or years before that. They then empty your apartment and get two other apartments to film in. They create a storyline. XH and I almost made it to an episode, but we weren't exciting enough for TV.

I am actually trying to make that decision now if we are moving or staying.

I want to move main reason is taxes. I would like a different house and I won’t buy another here cause I refuse to pay that kind of money and then taxes on top of that.

Pretty sure we will stay refinance and do the house over cause for some reason I just can’t move!! I wonder how every thing gets paid for from states that don’t have high property taxes. From the very little research I did looks like you pay for more the thing a that our taxes cover here. I am sure it cheaper in the long run out of state.

It did sound like they are trying to lower property taxes so hopefully that happens.

I'm glad we finally moved off of the island. As much as I loved the schools and my community in Stony Brook living on LI was becoming such a headache that I was agitated every time I walked out the door. The traffic is ungodly and the overcrowding is getting to be too much. I also feel like you can't enjoy any of the nice, fun things on the island because no matter what you do or when it's an insane mob scene. I also hated being locked in by the city, getting off or on the island is just madness that it's not worth the effort to bother.

Where we are now is like night and day. We're more rural so it's very quiet and peaceful, there is ZERO traffic in our town and we're surrounded by peaceful woods, parks and wildlife. It's really nice not being on top of people all of the time or hearing constant traffic and chaos. It's been a nice change of pace, I feel much calmer every day and we've been able to enjoy nature more than we ever did on the island.

LI will always be home and there are things I miss but moving was the right choice and even my kids would agree even though they left friends behind. If you're thinking about moving and can do it, don't hesitate. There are so many nicer, more affordable and beautiful places to live across this country.

That sounds perfect! We're on 2.5 acres but our yard is backed up to 28 acres of preserved land and now that I've had a taste of more property and nature, I want more!! LOL Like you, we'd love to be on a ton of land in the woods one day. I'd love to buy property at some point and then build a beautiful log cabin which has been my dream for decades. You definitely can't do that on LI which is why we always wanted to leave.

The entire metro area is a crowded disaster. My DH jokes we should move back to LI to get away from the traffic.

Crazy as this might sound, NJ! We had NO idea that western NJ had areas like this and could be so nice. It's really different from what you'd expect NJ to be. We were pleasantly surprised.

We would like to eventually move to the immediate Boston suburbs. Not cheaper, but nicer, with better schools and a better quality of life.
