NYC Itinerary w/ kids
I am terrible planning this kind of stuff, in my mind its amazing and then the reality is that nothing works out.
Going into the city with my 10 year old (girl) and twins 8 1/2 years old (boy & girl) for the day. No idea what to do. We have done Statue of Liberty and numerous museums (and the twins hate museums ). Broadway shows are not my sons thing. Considering a cupcake tour...
need a day full of ideas!
do you think weekends or weekdays are any less crowded?

Even though they are technically museums, kids usually love Ripley's Believe It Or Not, and Madame Tussauds (the IMAX movie and Ghostbusters floor are great immersive experiences). My DD at that age loved sailing the remote control sailboats in Central Park.

Look in to the Central Park self guided tours...you can do Belvedere Castle among other things. They also have the zoo and that amusement park area in the park. Bryant Park and the NY Public Library is fun... I always loved the Cloisters growing up.

You could walk the High Line Park (there's a vendor section half way that has ice cream and other snacks) and then walk to the USS Intrepid. There's also stuff to do along the Hudson River around Pier 25 that has parks and mini golf.

Re: NYC Itinerary w/ kids
Maybe do a double decker bus tour around the city. I think you can hop on and off at various places.
Maybe go to the top of building. Rockefeller Center offers a Top of the Rock view and has some fun shops around the area including Lego Store. Times Square is a little walk away for more shopping at the M&M's store and Disney Store. Could have lunch at a fun place like Bubba Gump, Planet Hollywood or Hard Rock.
My sons are 3 and 6 and we did the above trip (minus visiting the Top of Rock b/c it was $$$) several times and they loved it. My kids liked Planet Hollywood best. They are always asking to go on the double decker buses so we'll try that another day.

Re: NYC Itinerary w/ kids
Not sure when you're going but weekends in the city are a bit quieter in the summer since a lot of people living here leave for the beaches.
If you do The Intrepid there is a great splash pad a block or 2 south along the hudson that the kids will love if you bring their suits. There are some food options along the area to grab a bite to eat. The splash pad is free and open 10am till 10pm.
There's also The Circle Line right there and The Beast Speedboat Ride.
Here is the splash pad. I'm telling you the kids love this!
