NY Paid Family Leave?
I just got this in an email from my HR dept. Does anyone know anything about this?
Seems like they are moving to make paid leave more mandatory but they only pay you 50% of your salary? I wonder how this will work.
What is New York Paid Family Leave?
New York Paid Family Leave (PFL) is a new statutory employee benefit provided under the New York Workers’ Compensation Law. These benefits become mandatory as of January 1, 2018, and include job-protected paid leave. Specifically, eligible employees will be entitled to job-protected paid time off from work, with continued health benefits and a right to reinstatement, to bond with a new child, care for a family member with a serious health condition and address qualifying situations that arise as a result of a family member’s military service. New York PFL doesn’t provide leave or wage replacement benefits for an employee’s own health condition.
In 2018, employees may take up to eight (8) weeks of PFL for qualifying reasons and receive 50% of their average weekly wage for such weeks of leave. The PFL benefits will increase in stages each year until it reaches 12 weeks of leave and 67% of average weekly wage in 2021. PFL is an insured benefit that is community-rated and paid for through employee contributions. For 2018, that contribution is set to 0.126% of an employee’s weekly wage.

NY Paid Family Leave?
I think it's similar to short term disability. When you're on disability, you don't get your full salary. That's why your own illness isn't included in this program because it already exists as disability insurance.

Yes this is in addition to FMLA. It's funded by the employees.

We will all pay $1 something per paycheck i think. Its FMLA so can use to take care of any family member.
not easy for most working NYers to 12+ weeks on only 50% salary though

It's better than taking it on zero percent though like i did when i had my kids.

It's better than taking it on zero percent though like i did when i had my kids.
Same. I got nothing. I had to go back in 8 weeks because I couldn't afford to be unpaid any longer.
So this is at least a STEP in the right direction.
And it seems like it will go up to a higher percentage in coming years. (67% by 2021)
This country really needs to get with the program and start forcing companies to provide paid leave.
