If someone goes out on FMLA, can they lose thier job?

You can't lose your job, it's against the law. FMLA protects you from losing your job. you're job is held for 12 weeks.

Not while out on leave, but once they're back, they can. They cannot be fired because they took FMLA. It would have to be legitimate reasons (performance, lateness, etc).

You can not be fired while on family medical leave. But as a pp said you can be fired upon your return for a reason other than you having been out on a leave.

Nope! that's the purpose of taking FMLA. Your job is secure and your benefits (not necessarily salary) for 12 weeks.
