Re: No Tuna AND No Deli Meats!?
I pretty much always knew that I would eat white meat once getting pregnant. I started eating fish last year in preparation-to get back into the whole meat idea. I just don't eat healthy enough as a vegetarian, so here I am. I eat chicken maybe 2x a week. I wonder if I will go back to veggie after the baby...

I started doing the fish thing too. I'm a pretty healthy vegetarian, but I always said that I'd eat meat if my body craved it during pregnancy. Unfortunately, my mind overpowers my cravings and it just doesn't happen. Good for you though.
P.S. Sorry to hijack this thread.

Re: No Tuna AND No Deli Meats!?
I eat chicken and fish but no red meats. My acupuncturist suggested I add in some grains and beans with protein. I have been eating barley, quinoa, chickpeas and lentils once or twice a week for the past two weeks. for lunch I've also been eating salads with chickpeas for protein.

Re: No Tuna AND No Deli Meats!?
I've really been having a problem with this because I have been craving deli sandwiches like crazy and I am having a bad aversion to chicken! I gave in and have had cold cuts like 2 times. I have started to make a roast beef for dinner once a week or every other week and we cut in on our slicer, really thin. I make my sandwiches out of that. Pretty good. I've also had hot pastrami sandwiches from a kosher deli. So good. I'd love a big fat american hero right now!

Re: No Tuna AND No Deli Meats!?
I eat both in moderation. I asked my dr beforehand and she said that tuna is ok every other week or so (I'm 25 weeks and have had tuna 3 times) and deli meats are ok as long as they come from a place that has a high turnaround (like a busy deli or grocery store deli) and to not eat the deli meats after 3 days.

Re: No Tuna AND No Deli Meats!?
I eat both, just not all the time. My aunt and my mother ate tuna all the time when they were pregnant and my cousins and brothers are all very healthy today!
My Dr said I can eat both, just not everyday, once a week is fine.

Re: No Tuna AND No Deli Meats!?
Listeria is something that would be in the meat when it was manufactured, so you could get it from the cleanest deli and it can still be contaminated. Obivously a place that cleans their slicers after every meat/cheese would be ideal since an already contaminated slab of meat would contaminate the other stuff. Most cases of listeria come from meat that is already packaged as well as hot dogs.

Re: No Tuna AND No Deli Meats!?
I avoided any deli meats and when i went for my first doc. appointment my doc said it was perfectly fine to have them. So i'm back to eating sandwiches! As for tuna....i dont' eat it anyway but they said one can a month.
I guess you do what you are comfortable with
ETA: i just went on the usda website and it did say not to eat any luncheon meats unless they heated until steaming. ugh...now i don't know what to do. I was so excited to finally be able to have my turkey sandwiches again:(
