No thermostat where baby will sleep

Hi ladies,

I am currently pregnant, 36W 5D. I heard that keeping the room between 67-72 degrees is best for reducing the risk of SIDS. However, the room where baby will sleep has no thermostat. Is this dangerous? We don't have central air and the wall unit does not have a thermostat. We are taking all other precautions (we have a ceiling fan, we are not using bumpers in the crib, no loose bedding, no blankets, no stuffed animals, etc.). Anyone have any thoughts? TIA!

Re: No thermostat where baby will sleep

I've actually never heard of a bedroom having a thermostat in it. Even if it did, without central air conditioning, a thermostat wouldn't do anything.

Do you have a window AC unit in the room?

Just keep the room as cool as possible with the fans.

Keep in mind that the vast majority of humans don't have A/C, thermostats, or relatively cool Northern climate summer nights.

Re: No thermostat where baby will sleep

You could get a standalone thermometer and put it in the room. Then run the a/c etc. and see what temp it's telling you. You can adjust the air from there.

I bought one on amazon after searching for nursery thermometer.

I got the glo egg thermometer from bbb. We have her in our room and a wall AC. We have a cape home and it gets hot so we have been using it to make sure it isn't too hot or cold. Also I make sure DD is in pjs that will keep her comfy

Our monitor has a thermostat on it. I am not sure if it is accurate, but mostly I just go by if it is comfortable for us, it's ok for the baby.
We have a stand alone in our LR we got for $5 at wal-mart, but you would need to go into the room to check the temp.

What I was saying is that I don't have central A/C and the bedroom AC wall unit does not have a thermostat. Our wall units downstairs do (in the living room and dining room, etc.) but in the bedrooms, the wall units just have settings (1-10), not thermostats.

This is what my mom suggested - makes a lot of sense. Thank you!!

The best way to reduce the risk of SIDS is to sleep near your baby- bassinet in your room or something like that. Sounds like you have everything else covered. My infant monitor reads the temp. in the room so I always know when it may be getting a little warm, we typically keep his room at 71-72 but he didn't start sleeping there until he was 5 months old.

Also, one last thing....not to cause MORE worry for you but definitely educate yourself about vaccines and consider delaying DTap until 3 months....here are the package inserts for two prominent DTAP vaccines which list Sudden INfant Death as adverse reactions. These inserts are FROM the manufacturers themselves.

Don't be bullied by your doctor and do your research and ask for teh names of each vaccines to read and research before your appt if this is reallly a concern for you.

We have a cape, too!! Gets very hot... And we will be keeping him in our room for the first several months. Chat Icon I got two sleepsacks so I'm hoping he likes them - we got light ones, not the fleecey ones, so he's not too warm in the summer.

No thermostat where baby will sleep

I would suggest a thermometer..we got a battery operated digital clock for in there with thermometer so we knew, but we mostly go by how the house feels and adjust accordingly..

Gotcha. I hate those "1-10" setting A/C units.... I used to have a couple of them years ago.

Re: No thermostat where baby will sleep

dh found a thermostat that we keep in ds room, and had a reader that we keep on our room. it actually had the ability to monitor two rooms and then your own. I'm able to see weekday temps both Ds rooms are.
