wow.. lots of great and insightful answers. Hrm..
Would it be uncool to call her up and say "Hey so no gifts, but can I help out with anything else, food, drinks etc"??
I think this is a great idea!

Don't bring anything.
What I would do is give them a card and make a charitable donation in the family's name.

Re: * No Presents Please *
I really, really hate when people put that on an invite, especially for a child's birthday party. It makes me very uncomfortable to be put in that predicament. I understand the parents don't want unneeded items or perhaps for people to spend money but, to me, how can you not give a child a birthday present?! Whether or not they "know" at 1, it's still a birthday! I just got that invitation for a 4 year old. There is NO WAY I'm going without a pretty gift for this 4 year old princess. Part of the birthday excitement is presents!
In most cases I either get a gift card or give money.

I HATE getting a ton of gifts that my kid doesn't really need at a party. I donate toys often given because it gets to be overkill.
DO ask what you could bring. It would be nice if you could bring appetizers/desserts/ something to make the party easier.

Re: * No Presents Please *
if the invite says no gifts, i wouldn't bring a gift.
Doesn't it seem rude to ignore the hosts wishes and go out and get some small token anyway, just so you as a guest feel better?
I get that some people don't feel comfortable showing up with nothing, but aren't you then doing the opposite of what the host asks by ignoring the request? And then you make the people who did listen to the request feel bad for showing up with nothing..even though that's what the invite said.
to the OP - i like your idea of offering to help with something else related to the party instead.

just b/c they aren't getting gifts from guests, does NOT mean they aren't getting gifts.
and most kids don't open gifts at the party. for a kid, a party with cake and friends and family and fun is excitement in and of itself.

I think it's rude to tell people not to bring a gift to a party. I love to buy presents for my loved ones and friends to celebrate their milestones... and it doesnt have to be some crazy expensive thing.
I take pride that I put a lot of thought into what I give people (and I always make sure that I give a gift receipt so they have the option of taking it back if they dont want or need it) I would still respect the person said dont bring a gift.. but I think it's rude. JMO
Part of the reason I asked for no gifts was because my dd is only 2 and I have a closet still full of Christmas toys. I pull new stuff out in a rotation since my house is small and I just don't have space to have everything out. Even with only having 1/2 the toys out at a time it looks like TRU threw up in my house. I feel so freaking guilty that people took the time to buy her gifts and she can't even really enjoy them. I don't think that's rude at all. What would be ruder, IMHO, would be not saying anything and then returning the gift, regifting it, or donating it. People took the time to shop....I would be so pissed if someone did that to me. There could be a reason they asked for no gifts...it's rude to bring something when it says not to. OP I think calling and asking is a great idea!

This. I agree. I feel weird going to a party empty handed. I know it's their request but I love gift giving and knowing myself........I would probably still bring something. Maybe that's not the right thing to do but it's what feels right to me.
