* No Presents Please *
Ummm what do I bring if the invitation says that. Its a pool party for a 1yr old. Community pool, bring sunscreen and hats etc at the bottom says
*No Presents Please*
ummm ok
Hubby laughed and said well we did sort of supply them. They adopted her very suddenly last year. Surprised they were accepted so fast and were paired with an expected mom who was so far along. Within a few weeks pretty much. So she got all our stuff. Clothes, high care, pretty much everything we still had, diaper genie, wipes, wipe warmer, etc.
All that put aside.. what do I bring to this party? Feels odd to show up empty handed.

Something inexpensive and fitting with a pool party - water toys, a cute towel, sunglasses, etc.

Re: * No Presents Please *
I would bring a GC to TRU in a card and let the parents decide how to use it. I personally cannot show up somewhere empty handed.

I like the TRU GC idea. A 1 year old doesn't really "get" gifts as far as I'm concerned. I would put it in a card so it's not obvious I brought a gift in case others don't. I just wouldn't want to look showy.

My cousin recently had a first bday with no presents please on the invite. I gave money because I felt weird coming empty handed.

If they are asking you to not bring a gift, don't bring a gift. I'm making the same request for my dd's birthday and I hope people honor it.

Maybe make a donation to a charity with a note in the birthday card?

Re: * No Presents Please *
We have a party like this over the weekend and I was told directly by the mom and by close friends of her that she wants no presents, no gift cards, no cash, etc. It's a very large 1st birthday. At this point I'm planning on going empty handed.

I so agree. It is amazing that a request this small cant be respected. You don't have to show up empty handed, bring a card if you want. I may be old school but "no presents" I take as no presents.

Re: * No Presents Please *
I would not bring a present, but if I could find a small token gift for a couple of bucks that went with the theme of the party, that's what I would do. Like another poster suggested a pool toy. Maybe even a small beach ball, or a shovel and pail, etc. Something no more than 7 or 8 bucks.

Gift card or cash. A small token or a pool toy=present. They obviously either want to pool the $ into a savings account fot the child or use GCs for one big gift of some sort.

I get their intentions - too many toys & don't want people to spend money. I put that on an invite & would never do it again. Most people brought presents & the ones that didn't felt uncomfortable.
I would get something functional (like the beach theme - towels, you can get them monogrammed with their initials) or a gift card.

I wouldn't say this is the case for everyone that puts this on the invite. For some parents it's just a matter of not needing anything, cash or gift card included. I only say this because I just had a conversation with a close friend that stated this on the invite. She really truly wants everyone to not bring a single thing.

Re: * No Presents Please *
I would be more upset if people bought some rinky dink gift out of some sort of obligation. I HATE cheap plastic toys with a passion.
I am currently debating this now...the "no gift" thing. it's pretty clear though that it makes people so uncomfortable lol.
but if you HAVE to bring something, what about movie passes or passes to the acquarium...something they can do together as a family, and something that can be easily hidden in the envelope of a card, so as to not make anyone who can respect their wishes to the letter feel badly for doing so.

Bring nothing but maybe a card for the birthday child. If you MUST bring something I would bring the host some flowers or a bottle of wine as a hostess gift. As a parent that just hosted a giftless party*eyeroll* I asked for no gifts for a reason and to have 25 people show up with gifts was frustrating. I asked for a reason, and Ophellia is right bringing a cheap ass gift so you feel better is more rude in my opinion. They said no gifts, so they ment no gifts.

Re: * No Presents Please *
I think it's rude to tell people not to bring a gift to a party. I love to buy presents for my loved ones and friends to celebrate their milestones... and it doesnt have to be some crazy expensive thing.
I take pride that I put a lot of thought into what I give people (and I always make sure that I give a gift receipt so they have the option of taking it back if they dont want or need it) I would still respect the person said dont bring a gift.. but I think it's rude. JMO

wow.. lots of great and insightful answers. Hrm..
Would it be uncool to call her up and say "Hey so no gifts, but can I help out with anything else, food, drinks etc"??

Ibut if you HAVE to bring something, what about movie passes or passes to the acquarium...
HAHA this is a huge pet peeve of mine (totally unrelated to my own post) but the Aquarium in San Antonio at the Zoo was shut down. It was shoved into Sea World instead. It annoys me beyond belief as I'm a bit of a fan of the fishies.
I take AJ to the Corpus Christi to get a big Aquarium feel. Dolphin show, bird show, etc.
The baby is only 1, movie passes is a bit much.. but I think I have some ideas.
