OMG its completely shocking....its so disappointing that the richest country in the world can't let the people who are populating the future spend time to start families. Its a travesty. I agree! its outrageous!

Re: No Maternity Leave?
i work for the federal government and i get no paid maternity leave - i can take 12 weeks to one year but i have to use my sick/vacation time
i also *think* that i can't get NYS disability for this reason, I am not 100% positive about this but a few girls that have had babies have said it is true!

My company doesn't provide paid mat leave either. I don't think many companies do. When it's "my time" I am just going to rack up as much PTO as I can.
According to our HR department NYS is one of the worst when it comes to paying out disability. As an earlier poster said, they only pay about $165 a week. My company hdqts is based in California which pays the best pregnancy disability in the country..up to $700 per week, based on salary. Too bad I don't live there!
After taxes, I got $780.
For the whole time right not a week?

We don't have maternity leave at our company. I don't know anyone who has maternity leave at their company.

Re: No Maternity Leave?
My TDI here in RI is as follows:
Your weekly benefit rate will be equal to 4.62% of the wages paid to you in the highest quarter of your Base Period. Your weekly benefit rate remains the same throughout your benefit year. Effective 7/1/07, $69.00 is the minimum and $652.00 is the maximum benefit rate. This does not include dependency allowance.
I am clueless how much I would get...to make this easy, if I made 40,000 a year, that means I made 10,000 a quarter, and so I would get 462 a week approximately?
I am so clueless
not totally TTC right now, but wanna be prepared!

I work for the State and we don't get paid maternity leave. You can use accrued sick/vacation time, and then take unpaid. I don't know of many places that offer paid, actually.
I work for the State too and was shocked to learn that I don't get paid maternity leave. I have to use all of my sick/vacation time. I used to work for the city and they had paid maternity leave and each year you were there, you get another week. It surprised me that the city maternity leave was better than the state. I chose to work for the State for the benefits, not the salary! Also, I was told that I will not get disability. You have to pay for disability insurance in order to get disability

and we also have AFLAC- which is $35 a month and also covers pregnacy
An Aflac rep spoke at my job last year and I asked about this. She said it does not cover a "normal" maternity leave. It only covers you in the event of extenuating circumstances.
I'd double check with an aflac rep just to be sure.
I had AFLAC and it SURELY paid off!! I had short term disability insurance. You have to talk out the policy 10 months before you can collect (so nobody gets preggo, then gets the policy). Definitely look into AFLAC. I didn't pay a lot into it, but got over $1,200 when I was home on maternity. Let me know if you have questions

Re: No Maternity Leave?
I think this is common. I can get NYS disability for 6/8 weeks and then they are required to hold the job for up to 9 months I think, but that is all unpaid.

Re: No Maternity Leave?
In NC I do get maternity leave, but its unpaid, so I have disability insurance that will cover me for the 6-8 weeks that I will take in the future.

Re: No Maternity Leave?
We're preparing to begin TTC next year and I am so glad I saw this. None of the companies I've ever worked for paid for a amternity leave, including my current company. I didn't know I could get disability. This is going to be so hard since we live on my paycheck. DH doesn't make enough to support us. I don't know how the heck we're going to do it.

I can save one or the other, but not both, and I forget which it is. Doesn't help much though because I just started with them in October and don't earn PTO until January.

Re: No Maternity Leave?
a job I once had gave 6 weeks fully paid maternity leave, and you could accrue up to 30 sick days (and they carried over) which you could use for the remaining 6 weeks.
I never realized how good that was until I saw this thread.

Re: No Maternity Leave?
In NYS, you are eligible for disabilty for six weeks, it pays $170 before taxes, that is the law. If you work for a company that has more than 50 employees in a 50 mile radius, then you can take an additional 6 weeks unpaid.
If your job has additional maternity leave policies, that is great.
I was fired at 38 weeks pregnant, I got unemployment for 5 months and then went back to work at a new job. Being a pregnant employee can really suck

Yes--I have over 40 days sick accumulated, so that's 8 weeks paid right there. I actually have another 40 vacation days saved, so that's another 8 weeks there. If I decide to stay out longer than 16 weeks, it is unpaid, and I lose my subsidized health benefits for the unpaid period (DH and I are both on my State benefits). You have to at that point pay the Cobra health rate, which is HIGH. So that's one of the reasons why I won't do unpaid sick.

Re: No Maternity Leave?
FMLA and NYS disability are two entirely separate things. Your company has to pay into disability to get disability and believe it or not, some don't. FMLA only requires that your employer allow you to take 12 weeks off UNPAID if you have worked there at least a year and have worked I believe 1250 hours and they have 50 or more employees.
Oh, and that six weeks of disability is actually five weeks since they have a week waiting period. I got a total of $825 for maternity leave. Pathetic really, but what are you gonna do?

Re: No Maternity Leave?
Wish I worked for company with a D A M N handbook so I would know. I work for a small family owned business. I have NO IDEA if they will pay me for maternity leave or not. And we do not fall under FMLA because we are only about 25 full timers.
Also, in the recent past several of us had asked about AFLAC and for some reason my boss seems against it even though it would cost him nothing. So now I am up that proverbial creek.
After the new year, I will be asking to have a meeting with the bosses and ask to be told if they will give me paid maternity leave or not. If so, we will be fine for the 6 weeks. If they won't be paying me, we will start stashing every penny away.
