No Maternity Leave?

I have had other companies just call is disablility but at my job there is no maternity leave. I can take all the vacation and sick I have accrued , which will end up being three weeks at the most, and then after that its not paid.

Not paid? In this day and age how am I supposed to support myself for that time without pay? I'd like to be out six weeks but how can I do when I am not going to get paid for three of them?

Is it just me or is this completely unfair? My company is great to work for in every other sense, and then I just found this out.

isn't that against the law? Chat Icon

I believe that at minimum, you are entitled to disability.

Re: No Maternity Leave?

They aren't required to give you paid maternity leave, unless you can qualify for disability through the State. They are, however, required to hold your position open for you for 12 weeks, if FMLA applies.

I absolutely LOVE my job and all the perks, but the biggest drawback is I also don't get any paid maternity leave. It will end up costing us almost $10k Chat Icon

So sorry! Been there, done that - it aint easy.

Thankfully, I don't work for that company anymore and I am pretty sure I will have maternity leave with my new job

Re: No Maternity Leave?

I think the law is if you work for a company of 50 people or more, you get disability pay.
I got it twice and since my company did not pay me at all, I saved up money before we even ttc to have enough for the 3 months I would be home.

Re: No Maternity Leave?

I have disability insurance- I forgot the percentage

and we also have AFLAC- which is $35 a month and also covers pregnacy

Only 1 company of the 4 I have worked for has offered paid leave- and that was Macy's

(I am not TTC- but this is something that matters to me for the future)

We don't have fully paid leave either. If we want our full wage, we have to use accrued PTO.

Our company does pay for Short Term Disability (STD) insurance which is about 60% of your income for as long as the OB deems you are disabled, typically 6 weeks for vaginal / 8 weeks for c-section. After taxes, it still doesn't amount to much.

I also got NYS disability, which is a laughable amount.

It's the same with my company - you get NYS disability (6 weeks for v-birth, 8 weeks for c-sect) but we don't have paid maternity leave.

That all depends on the state you live in - in NYS it applies, elsewhere, not always (i.e. where I live, in PA, we don't get any disability for maternity leave)

An Aflac rep spoke at my job last year and I asked about this. She said it does not cover a "normal" maternity leave. It only covers you in the event of extenuating circumstances.

I'd double check with an aflac rep just to be sure.

Re: No Maternity Leave?

My company doesn't provide paid mat leave either. I don't think many companies do. When it's "my time" I am just going to rack up as much PTO as I can.

According to our HR department NYS is one of the worst when it comes to paying out disability. As an earlier poster said, they only pay about $165 a week. My company hdqts is based in California which pays the best pregnancy disability in the country..up to $700 per week, based on salary. Too bad I don't live there!

good idea- but I am pretty sure I read it in the book- it's not for a long time anyway- so I am not that worried- since I have a few polices

I work for the State and we don't get paid maternity leave. You can use accrued sick/vacation time, and then take unpaid. I don't know of many places that offer paid, actually.

Re: No Maternity Leave?

I am not TTC right now but planning on starting in about a year or so. So if I need to start stashing money away so I can buy diapers I need to know now.

Its really nauseating, my husband would get 12 weeks, I believe paid. I he did not have the the kid!

I have the same situation at my job. I get to take 12 weeks off, no pay beyond what I get from NYS Disability.

OMG its completely shocking....its so disappointing that the richest country in the world can't let the people who are populating the future spend time to start families. Its a travesty.

Re: No Maternity Leave?

I guess I should consider myself extremely lucky. . . I have high risk pregnancies and I was out for 6 months with both of my pregnancies and was paid a FULL paycheck. The time that I was off before I actually gave birth was paid by disability (my full paycheck) and then I believe my maternity leave is either 14 or 16 weeks of full pay after I gave birth.
