Nobody says you have to get a gift off the registry
This is true! How about getting a cute gift like a picnic basket, a blanket, a few bottles of wine and some non-perishable foods, maybe from Harry and David? This is something romantic and thoughtful and will probably come in handy.
A registry is just a suggestion of what the couple wants, I don't think you should feel compelled to buy something you either can't afford or don't want to purchase.

I disagree with that. A registry is a wish list, but it's not a guideline. Like if the bride is registered for $6 serving spoons at C&B, it doesn't mean that you should go to bbb and buy the cheaper ones.
I had this problem at my shower a few years ago. It's very frustrating when I got about 10 different serving spoons, mixing spoons because no one went to BBB and bought the ones I registered for. Call me a snot, but I just threw out the cheaper ones, they were of no use to me.
I didn't expect everyone to buy me a $100 + gift, so I had a wide range of prices on our registeries.

Re: Wedding registries are getting ridiculous!
I agree registries (both bridal & baby) are getting totally out of control. We registered at BBB, Crate & Barrel and Macys. Our items range from a $.95 condiment spoon to a $300 bed in a bag set. We wanted to make sure that people had a wide range of price points to select from.

We did Fortunoff for higher end gifts and target for people who couldn't spend 100.00 plus on gifts.
That is a great idea. Fortunoff should not be the main registry store!
I don't think Fortuoff being the main registry is the problem, it is the type of stuff they registered for. Fortunoff was my main registry, but I did not have china or crystal on my registry. My dishes were Fiestaware (less than $30 a place setting) and my flatware was stainless steel - the set was under $50.00. A lot of our housewares were pretty reasonable as well.
I do agree, though, that they should be considerate of guests and register for a range of stuff.
Fortunoff was my main registry as well...I don't think that's the problem. It's the items on the registry. My cousin is registered at BBB and her wine glasses are $45 each! it really depends what the Bride and groom are registering for, not the store. JMHO

why not? There are gifts there at all price points.
Ok, I guess they do. Unfortunately, the people I am referring to didnt register for stuff at all price points, whereas, at another store, there might be MORE items on a lower price point that I could afford
You could just get them a gift cert to the store they are registered at and then they can apply it to whatever they want. That is what I would do. In my circle the registry is really for the shower. When they get married most of the people i know give monetary gifts

I agree... it's frustrating when people see you picked out a specific item and buy you a cheaper version of it (especially when it wasn't very expensive in the first place)
Ex: We registered for a $29.99 ice bucket at BBB. It was brushed silver and matched the rest of our kitchen accessories. Someone bought us a $19.99 ice bucket (also from BBB) that was a black matte finish, and wasn't nearly as nice. Then, someone else ended up buying us the one we registered for since it didn't get taken off of our registry.
We had plenty of other things on our registry that were ~$20 or less. It's just frustrating that someone decided the one we wanted was "too expensive" and decided the other one was "good enough"
That's like registering for bedding in one color and then having someone find a different color sheets being discontinued, and then buying you those instead even though they dont match because they can save $15

that was exactly my point. They couldn't afford to spend the $20 per spoon, so they got me a much cheaper version. I'd rather have just gotten a gc.

Re: Wedding registries are getting ridiculous!
I only registered at Fortunoff's- that store has plenty of stuff that is inexpensive. In fact, it has all of the same exact inexpensive things- can openers, sponges, etc. as Bed Bath and Beyond. It's really a myth that Fortunoff doesn't have items for people on a budget. These have gorgeous crystal bowls and candle sticks there for $20-25. I registered for plenty of affordable things. Also, the wrapping is all free and beautilful. The only registry that I can see being ridiculous is Bloomingdales, everything there is high-end and pricey. Also, Wiliam's and Sonoma can get pricey.

At least BBB is great with returns!
Edit: I hear target is awful with returns. I'd be really frustrated if I got stuck with the ice bucket we registered for plus 3-4 cheaper versions that other people thought I should have instead.

Re: Wedding registries are getting ridiculous!
They have all the basics at Fortunoff's. Have you ever been there?

My brother and SIL registered at Fortunoff's. I said to him "Oh, and where else"..He just looked at me. They got the hint! They also registered at Bed Bath and Beyond. My sister and I(MOH) and my nephew were all in the wedding shelling out enough money as it was (oh and 2 bridal showers as well..long story), but, there was no way I was going to shop in Fortunoffs too. Just couldn't do it. They registered for their china and bedding at Fortunoff and the "basics" all at Bed Bath and Beyond. I may have came off a little "B i t c h y" but I was like "Yea, ok"..I'll tell you flat out, no way could I have done it.. Oh, and I was pregnant too, so, add a baby coming into the world. I LOVE my brother and SIL to pieces, but, this just irked me!

We originally registered at Fortunoff and they have a lot of the same stuff that BBB does! We ultimately ended up switching everything off of that registry onto Macys and BBB because BBB has a better return policy, more people know about the coupons and it's easier for our OOT guests.
Fortunoff does have more high-end items than some of the others, but they do have all of the basics too.
