I see so many recommendations for Newport RI. Can you recommend
Places to stay
things to do
how many days can you spend there?

Re: Newport, RI
DH and I have been to Newport twice and both times we stayed about 5 miles from the downtown at a chain hotel to take advantage of the points we had earned. I have heard that the Viking hotel is nice - expensive - but close to everything.
I would definitely see the mansions. It would probably take 2 days to see them all.
I would recommend doing a sailboat tour. We were on a private charter sail last year and it was so much fun. Being on a boat really rounds out the Newport experience. We were on this one: Sail
We also attended our first polo match. We backed our SUV up to the field and had a little tailgate picnic during the match.
Take 1/2 day and do the Cliff Walk.
Next time we go, I want to visit a vineyard and orchard. I also want to do the Ghost Tour.

I agree with PP. We stayed at a Travelodge (???) in Middletown. It had free continental bfast and cost about $60 per night. We did the vineyard one day, split up Cliff Walk over 2 days. Walked the campus of Salve Regina and bought the 5 pack of Mansion Tours.
It was a great 3 day/2 night trip. For food, we ate wherever we felt like. We did eat at this famous place (maybe someone else knows) I want to say it had a color in the name like Red something or another. We also drank the hometown brew (Newport Storm) whenever we had the chance.

Re: Newport, RI
We stayed at Hotel Viking . I felt like any second they were going to kick me out because they knew I was a fraud and shouldn't be staying at such a gorgeous hotel!
My brother Lives in Rhode Island so we stayed when we went for a Christening. I wish we had more time because I would have loved to have spent some more time walking around Newport. We had 1 day to do our own thing and the other day we had to do family stuff. I hope dh and I can go back soon for a long weekend.

Re: Newport, RI
DH and I stayed at the Hyatt Regency on Goat Island. It's a 10 minute walk across a bridge to the downtown area. The hotel was nice, but was a little overpriced IMO. We got a good deal on Hotwire, so that made up for it.
The mansion tours are a must. We went to see The Breakers and The Elms. It was just amazing to see how large these summer homes were. We also did a tour of Fort Adams which was pretty cool.
I honestly don't remember the restaurants that we went to. We did go to this BBQ place near the harbor and it was not very good.
ETA: We were only there for 2 nights, but it could have easily been 4 nights. There is so much that we didn't even do. In the summer you can definitely take a day or two just relaxing on the beach or by a pool

Re: Newport, RI
DH and I stayed in this B&B and loved it!
The innkeepers were so helpful, the rooms were gorgeous and the breakfast was out of this world.

We ate at 22 Bowens, Fluke, Red Parrot and Black Pearl. All were fantastic!

Re: Newport, RI
my husband and i stay in narragansett a lot and have done a few day trips to newport. we love castle hill - it is a hotel with restaurant. the hotel is a bit pricey but we always go for lunch. you can sit outside and watch sailboats. it is really pretty and the food is delicious but pricey - expect to pay $20 for a burger. it's worth it for the view on a pretty day!

Re: Newport, RI
I live in Rhode Island-not Newport, but we go there often.
Good restaurants to eat at are: Red Parrot, Black Pearl, Brick Alley Pub. DO the mansions, cliff walk, walk thru the downtown newport area. Also, there are a lot of little boat tours--there is a sunset cruise that is about an hour and a half-2 hours, etc.
I don;t know what hotels to recommend, as I have never stayed at any. But the hotels in Middletown are cheaper and very close to newport. However, idf you stay right in newport, everything is more accessible and you donl;t really need to drive anywhere (yuou ahve to pay to park anywhere in Newport pretty much)

Re: Newport, RI
DH and I never stay in Newport, we stay in Westerly, which is a small beach community with cheaper beach motels. Then we do day trips to Newport, take the ferry to Block Island, etc... I would say that 4 days would probably be a good amount of time to see Newport and the surrounding areas. Somebody else mentioned Castle Hill- great place for brunch. We like Atlantic Beach Club in Newport for dinner, or even just drinks.
