Newborn blood in stool?

This is my first post on this board and I wish it were a happier one Chat Icon

DD is 3 weeks old and has had terrible gas, crying spells and on and off constipation for the past 2 weeks, which none of the 3 formulas we've tried have alleviated. Earlier this week I found blood in her diaper. I took her to the ped who said it was likely a diary issue and switched her to alimentum. She also has multiple small fissures.

The past few days have been much better in terms of gas and constipation, but I found blood in her diaper again last night. I sent a pic to the ped and we agreed to wait and see what happens over the next few days.

Anyone have experience with bloody diapers and mind sharing the outcome? I am terrified of this being something more serious than a diary allergyChat Icon

Re: Newborn blood in stool?

My son had the worst blood in his stools from birth. He went through 5 formulas until we found Elecare... He had a severe milk protein and soy allergy. Alimentum made him so much worse and within 24 hours of being on it, he was in the ER. It can take a week or so for the intestinal tract to heal but I knew along with my sons drs that he needed the special formula. Within 48 hours, he was a new kid and at his 3 month appointment there was NO blood in his stools...

We had a similar experience. Nutramigen (similar to alimentium) was a million times worse than breastmilk for my dd. She went on Neocate and was a different child within days. She stayed on it until 18 months when the doctor transitioned her off. We saw a GI once we noticed blood in her stool.

Yes my dd did, she wasn't quite as young but I took her the dr. I had to give samples, bloodwork etc basically torturing the kid and it resolved on its own. In the end they said it just may have been something that irritated her intestines and there was no allergy or anything. I'm not sure how much blood you are seeing but this was a small amount my DD had. Just keep following up I with the pediatrician and know that it can take 1-2 weeks for them to adjust to the formula. It's nerve wrecking and annoying, hang in there!

Newborn blood in stool?

My dd had blood in her stool around eight weeks old- it turned out she had multiple food allergies. Once I eliminated the food she was allergic to from my diet the blood went away- she was EBF.

Get on Neocate. Ds1 was switched to Alimentum and did fine within a day. Ds2 needed the next step bc of his dairy allergy who he was Neocate. He was on it till 12 months but we started introducing dairy in cheese and yogurt at 9 months and he did fine. TTransitioned to whole milk at 12 months with no issues.

Contact your insurance for coverage on either Alimentim or Neocate. Both are expensive and most insurances cover in full with pedi note. You have to be sure you speak to the right person or you get the run around.

Newborn blood in stool?

My DS had blood in his stool. He had a milk protein allergy and was put on Elecare formula. The pain he was in stopped. We did see a pediatric GI as well. We were told that it may take a short amount of time for the intestines to heal. so we may have seen blood for the first few diapers. We had to send stool samples to the GI. To make sure there was no microscopic blood. Because even though I couldn't see it, it was apparently seen under the microscope.
Good Luck. hope your little one feels better soon.

We had a similar experience with dd1. She ultimately went on neocate for a milk protein allergy and was a different kid after about 8 days. You want to be aggressive with the formula but you also want to give the stomach a chance to heal. I'm thinking of you - I know it's rough to see your little one in pain.

Thank you all! It was quite a bit of blood initially, but has lessened. You really have to look to even notice it now (and I do, I've become quite the poop inspector). She seems so much more comfortable on the Alimentum. A gas pain here and there but other than that she's very calm. I'm hoping the milk issue is resolving and the blood is from the fissures. Going to speak with the ped and see if she thinks a trip to the GI is warranted (I'm leaning towards yes).

Thank you guys for your feedback, it made me feel so much better to see that this is fairly common!

I know that my nephew had to be put on Elecare because he still had a reaction to the Alimentum. If it continues I would confirm with a pediatric GI.

Re: Newborn blood in stool?

Alimentum still has diary as others have said. My son was on Nutramigen AA(Amino Acide formula) It smelled better than Elecare:) He also drank it where Elecare he would spit out. He still has food allergies, although he has grown out of his dairy allergy.
