New Jersey help
DH and I are exploring the option of living in New Jersey and were wondering which towns we could easily commute to NYC from.
Any help is appreciated! I don't know anything about Jersey at all!
Thanks!

Re: New Jersey help
I live in South Orange, the commute to NYC by train is 30 minutes. Maplewood, Milburn are nice.
If you want closer to the city, there's Hoboken, Jersey City, I used to live in Rutherford which I LOVED, Montclair, Clifton

Re: New Jersey help
Right now we live in Lyndhurst. it's about 40 minutes to NYC- take train to Hoboken- and then path over. Cost is about $100 amonth for both tickets. Other towns: Carlstadt- has REALLY low taxes Rutherford Nutley (i think we are probably going to buy here one day) N. Arlington Belleville (where Jr. Soprano lives)
we had lived in Jersey City- but i knew we wanted to have a family soon and i just didn't feel safe there. Hoboken is too $$$ for me and WAY too crowded for my taste.
What I like about Lyndhurst- is it is close to the city- but still gives you a suburban feel- it's close to everything- tons of shopping malls, etc- but doesn't have the crowds of LI.
Right now I saw a few homes in Lyndhurst from $350-400 that are cute with relatively low taxes ($4-5k per year)
edited to say- we rent now- b/c neither of us knows that much about NJ we figured we would rent around & try out areas b/f settling in.

Re: New Jersey help
There are so many towns that would be great. Check out the NJ Transit website & see which are on a direct train line or bus line. Then I would check out a map of NJ to see exactly where they are located. Of course budget is a huge consideration- there is a giant price range depending on town.
There are lots of great places out here! Good luck!

Re: New Jersey help
I live in Hoboken-- if you are interested in Condo living let me know.. I can give you details on commutes, etc. We moved from the city-- so we wanted the shortest commute possible since we were so used to a walk or subway ride to work..
ETA-- if we were to look for a house right now-- we'd look in Maplewood.

we loved maplewood when we were looking, but we couldn't find anything we both liked. I love the charming older homes and DH is more of a modern guy. We were able to find a nice compromise in the next town over

we both like old homes with character-- and I hear the commute from there is awesome-- plus the town is really cute. Again, having lived in NYC most of my adult life-- we really like a place with a little action.

Re: New Jersey help
We just moved to Springfield and so far we really like it. I commute into the city from the Millburn station (which is about a 10 minute drive from my house). The train ride in is about 35 minutes.

Re: New Jersey help
We live in Bergen County (Elmwood Park) which is right near Paramus. I'm not sure of the trains...but it's probably about 30-40 minutes. I have driven to the city on a Saturday or Sunday morning...and it's about 15 mintues
We are going to be selling our house and moving back to LI to be near my family...we moved to NJ for my job, and I no longer have that...and DH's family is scattered, so we really have no ties to NJ. It take me about 1 hour 15 minutes to get to LI (Holbrook) where my family is.

Same here although I commute out of maplewood which is a town closer to the city on the train line. It's a great commute and the town is a nice town and not too pricey but it's surrounded by other really expensive towns - so we get those benefits!

Re: New Jersey help
I live in Fair Lawn and it is a 45 minute to 1 hour bus ride, but you can also access trains from there. It's in Bergen County. You might want to go look on mlsnj.com just to get an idea of prices in different areas and what you get for your money to see which area works for you. We had friends in our town which is why we decided it but I also looked at schools, etc.

Re: New Jersey help
you'll find more affordable houses in towns that are NOT on a direct train line, if you don't mind driving over one town to catch the train/bus.

Stephanie, do you do this? Is it $$ to park in the station lot?

I work on 37th and Bway... I just started the job and thought since it was so close to Penn we would stay in NJ-- but now they are thinking the office is going to move-- I hope it's close to Penn for my Path commute..
Anyone who takes the Path-- we should meet up in Hobo one night!!

Re: New Jersey help
We live in Bedminster, NJ but we work one town away so our commute is rather easy. However, DH had to commute to NYC from here for about 1 month before his job was relocated. It took him about 1 hour and 15 minutes to get to NYC by either bus or train. If he drove to the city it would be a 2 hour commute during rush hour but a 45 minute commute at almost any other time.
When we were looking for a home we originally looked in Summit and the surrounding towns because the commute from Summit is 45 minutes by train. Unfortunately, unless you live in the town of Summit you cannot park in their commuter lots. They have a nonresident lot, but that is full by about 5 am. Sooooo, although it is theoretically a great idea to live in an area near a direct train, you might find it difficult to get a parking permit. I would call each town to determine what their regulations are and how to get a parking permit.
Good luck!!!

Re: New Jersey help
I agree about the parking permits.... South Orange has a 5 year waiting list (that we've only been on for 8 months!) Luckily though they have a Jitney service to the train station for residents, and there is a stop across the street from our house.
I do know there are some independent lots in South Orange that cost $50 -$100 bucks a month.

Re: New Jersey help
Lyndhurst has free parking- there is 1 lot that you need a permit for (town only) and one that is a 2 minute walk that is free- you just park- it's a big lot and it never fills up.
From Lyndhurst it's 18 minutes to Hoboken. From Hoboken it's 20 minutes to 33rd St. Via Path.
I prefer going via Path b/c it seems there are lots of problems with the transit trains going into Penn b/c they run on Amtrak lines which have a lot of power outages.
