Never cross a picket line..

was anyone else taught this as a child? My parents instilled this in me and my sister from a very young age, and my sister and I also used to go to protests with my parents.

To this day I cannot cross a picket line, DH makes fun of me, but since he has become part of a union, he does understand more.

Anyone else? Or am I just the child of hippie freaksChat Icon

Re: Never cross a picket line..

Coming from a blue collar union family- we were raised to NEVER cross a picket line- and to be supportive when we see one. Every job I've had in my adult life has been union and I've been an active part of every contract negotiation. That includes being a part of many picket lines.

My father was in a union, and my husband is. I was raised the same way - NEVER cross a picket line.

Re: Never cross a picket line..

I was not taught this as a child - my mother was managment. However, I know better anyway and do not cross picket lines. I even gave up my $10 Kohls coupon b/c of the labor dispute going on in East Setauket.

Honestly, my parents never really had anything to say about unions or their politics.

Re: Never cross a picket line..

I was never taught one way or the other about picket lines. My mom is a teacher and was in a union, so it's not because my family was completely anti-union or anything. My father (a banker / accountant) never really had anything to say about unions (even though he had LOTS to say about his political beliefs). It was never a big issue we discussed. I've never been in a situation where I had to decide whether or not to cross one, but I cannot imagine that I would cross one if I were in that situation.

Re: Never cross a picket line..

I would never cross a picket line to shop or anything like that BUT about ten years ago, Alitalia went on strike ( AGAIN ) and my father had been unemployed for about two years, working odd jobs so he applied to work there to make up for the strikers not working. . .

ten years later he still has the job, i am sure the other people have moved on and we didnt have to sell our house or go hungry.

you have to do what is best for your family!

same here. i doubt i even knew that unions existed until high school.

i have never seen a picket line anywhere i was going (honestly) but i don't think i would feel comfortable crossing it unless i knew about and disagreed with what the union members were fighting for.

(FTR, i am in a union now.)

Re: Never cross a picket line..

Big Union family here...I would NEVER cross. In 2001, when I worked for the Archidocese, I was on strike for 15 days. The fines were hefty and I didn't see a paycheck for almost 6 weeks.

However, now that I work for the UFT, I really despise this union. I think it is terrible and I LOATHE Randi Weingarten!

Okay, I think I am naive. I have never heard this, and I don't think I've EVER witnessed a picket line.

I call DH Norma Rae. So, no we never cross picket lines.

My father on the other hand is super conservative non-union. He thinks DH is being brain washed. But that's another story.

Same here. And now, as an adult, after living outside of Detroit for several years and both DH and I having worked in the auto industry we are both pretty non-union.

I don't think anyone in my family has ever been in a union. We don't even have any teachers in the family.

I did know what they were though--we learned about their formation in school & I remember hearing about various strikes in the news.

Nope. Never taught it. My parents were pretty anti-union. And, for the most part, so am I.

Mine either.

My mom & Aunt worked for NY Tel and HAD to cross the picket lines ... to be honest, some of the things that were done to the people who did were absolutely vile ...
