If you have talked to them, and it hasn't stopped, then check into noise ordinances and call the cops or animal control on them.

My parents dealt w/this and their neighbors dog (not in NY). And their town has a specific thing about dogs barking. Something like they can't bark for more than x hours, for so many minutes and hour (like 45 mins of continuous barking for three hours straight). They had to record it. The cops or animal control, maybe, came over an talk ed to the neighbors and it did get better and the neighbors moved too.

Good luck!

Thanks for responding. The thing is, the barking in the middle of the night is not long, maybe two minutes, but enough and loud enough to wake us and sometimes we don't fall back asleep. If it was constant at night, I will involve police. I just can't imagine leaving my dog outside in the middle of the night barking even for a second knowing my neighbors are feet away sleeping.

I wish I could help you but we actually have the same problem and even though our town has a noise ordinance that specifically has a clause about dogs, the cops are really lax about it. They actually went as far as telling us "video tape the barking for at least 20 minutes and then sue them" because they didn't want to deal with it Chat Icon So, basically, we've been living with the constant barking for about 5 years and nothing can be done about it.

Just so you know there are things on the market to "quiet" a dog barking.

I just looked at amazon, but if you google "stop barking dogs" all sorts of stuff comes up. It may not prevent the dog from starting, but it may STOP them. If it cost you a few mornings to train THIER dog, well, its a few good mornings spent.

Yes, I know about these and DH wants to get one. I am such a dog/animal lover that I am afraid it is harmful to a dog. Does anyone know more about these?

Ill be honest, I thought about it too because I have some yappy dogs as neighbors.

I think that if its used responsably it should be fine. Not like :press:press:press:press:press

(20x in a row)

But dont quote me on that.

Re: Neighbor's dog barking all hours - what to do

For two minutes in the middle of the night and I know it seems like the longest two minutes of your life, there isn't much you can do as far as calling the police are concerned. I don't know where you live, but where I live it has to be 20 minutes of constant barking.

I have 3 large breed dogs, my backyard is 50 x 100. There is only so much training you can give a dog, but unless you go to Schutzhund training or something equivalent, it is impossible to "train" them not to react to whatever they are barking at all the time. My dogs have all been through Basic & Advanced Obedience. If any one of my dogs wakes me up in the middle of the night, I know they have to go and I let them out. Most of the time they come right back in. I can't promise that if a cat/possum/raccoon/squirrel is in/near my yard that there isn't some barking. It's instinct and I have high-prey drive dogs. I do my best to get them in right away.

I don't know how the product listed in the pp works , but I would never use such a thing on my dogs. They may say it's humane but I can't imagine that emitting a noise at a frequency a dog can hear at over and over doesn't hurt their ears. If high pitched noises were played for you over and over, wouldn't it hurt your ears?

Your neighbors may not be sensitive to your issues, but it's not the dogs' fault. Keep trying with your neighbors.

I know it is not the dog's fault. I had a dog for 15 years who was my everything, but if anything came out of her mouth in the middle of the night in my yard, I would run to get her and bring her in immediately. I could see here and there, of course there are situations where you can't control, but this is a constant daily thing. It's like, let me let the dog out at 3 am and I will come back to get it in a few minutes regardless. I don't mind that I have to sit through the barking, as I do everyday, but it is the fact that it wakes me and sometimes I don't fall back asleep until shortly before when I have to get up, which leaves me exhausted the next day and it is honestly effecting my day the next day.

Re: Neighbor's dog barking all hours - what to do

I don't know why her neighbors are doing this, but sometimes my dogs (one of them - and then they all go out), may wake me up in the middle of the night to go. I also know the difference between when they "have to go" and there is something/someone outside - the behavior is different.

My DH gets up at 3:30 am once or twice a week to go to work for early OT and they get let out. I don't know about other people's dogs, but mine are like kids - if you wake them out of a dead sleep after sleeping for awhile, they are going to have to go. Also, 2 of mine are under 2 years old and the other is 9, that may have something to do with it.

Re: Neighbor's dog barking all hours - what to do

On a sidenote, we have trained one of our dogs to bark only at people approaching our property, and to cease with one command. We didn't use an advanced trainer, we read books and used consistency, with positive reinforcement. It is possible but perhaps requires more training for some dogs. These people don't sound like they care though. Chat Icon

I don't have any other great suggestions for you unfortunately, and if your town won't act on your behalf, I don't think having another conversation will hurt. Perhaps you could mention the products to stop them from barking and that some of your neighbors were considering using them.

Did they say why the dog is out at 3am in the first place? I hate to state the obvious but if it's to avoid an accident in the house, they can let the dog out right before they go to bed. I don't always let my dogs out just because they want to explore, it's not up to them. Chat Icon

Re: Neighbor's dog barking all hours - what to do

We are having a similar issue here. Our next door neighbor chains his dog (on a very long rope with toys) on his driveway for hours at a time - day and night - they have a fenced in yard but don't seem to put their dog there.

As a result it barks at all hours. Unfortunately it isn't for a few minutes at a time - but for 30, 45, 60 mins at 10pm, 11 pm and sometimes middle of the night and as early as 5 am. DD#2's room overlooks their driveway so it always wakes her up and even with sound machines - it wakes up our other daughter as well. It gets bad when the neighbor on the other side lets their dog out for 2 mins and then the dogs bark at each other over our property.

I know several neighbors have said something but it has done nothing. I'm kind of at a stand still - I don't want to report it to the town b/c I have to live here and don't wish to fight with our neighbor especially b.c we plan on living here for a very long time so moving isn't an option.

If you have several neighbors who are unhappy maybe can you write a polite note just asking that they not let their dogs bark for an extended period between say 9pm and 8am?

Otherwise your only real option is to see if there are any noise variances and looking into that.

Maybe its me...but you are saying the dogs for maybe 2 minutes? I was half expecting you to say 30 minutes - 1 hour - etc...you don't know what goes on in their house or what their schedules are so maybe 3 am is the time they are up?

When I get up at 5 am - I let my dogs out and I start the coffee. They do what they have to do and they come back in. Unfortunately, I can't get there within 10 seconds of the first bark because maybe I ran to the bathroom myself...

Complaining about 2 minutes is really just wasting your breathe...I can't see any town/city doing anything about 2 minutes.

If you tried approaching them, and there isn't anything changing...then unfortunately the only thing you can do is make changes. Maybe a noise machine? Maybe something to help you stay asleep?

I don't want to sound insensitive but they are animals and their natural instinct is to park at something especially if it is still dark and they see shadows.

I am glad you said this because I was struggling with how to write it without coming across as a beotchy dog owner.

It is constant during the day and night, but at 3am and 6am it is two loud dogs barking that has woke all neighbors up. I am a huge animal/dog lover. I remember always when my dog went out late at night, as she did many times when she was older and sick and on medicine, out of curtousy to my other neighbors, I would stay close by in case she started barking so I could quickly let her in. I guess it is just me and my two neighbors that don't get this and find this rude. All of us have dogs. I lost mine, but this seems to be the only house that doesn't care about others sleeping. It is also at 7am on weekends and that goes on for at least a half hour. My issue is I can't fall back asleep after being woke up and feel like a zombie the next day. I guess we as neighbors are asking alot Chat Icon

If I were you I would invest in a white noise machine. That will prevent you from being woken up by the dogs barking.

Two minutes of barking IS a long time. If it's 6 or 7am and your dog barks, it's your responsibility as an owner to make sure they stop. I understand not being able to get there within 10 seconds, but two minutes does not sound reasonable to me.

Unfortunately, I think that's part of living in a neighborhood that has people and pets. Both my neighbors have dogs that bark in the morning when they let me out to use the bathroom. It wakes me up sometimes sure but 6am is not horrible. Put a fan in your room, you will never hear them...
