Need opinions PLEASE!!
We are in the process of redoing basically the whole house (including gutting one bathroom and adding another) but we are leaving the kitchen for now. Right now there is this BRICK backsplash (which I hear was popular in the 70's ) behind the stove WHAT CAN I DO TO IT???? I was thinking of painting it but not sure what color . Should it be the same as the walls (which I'm not sure what color I'm doing yet..any suggestions are appreicated), lighter than the walls, darker than the walls or completely different than the walls Oh, I will be chaging the cabinet handles and hardware to a brushed silver type.
I need HELP!!!!
(don't mind the mess)
thanks!! Image Attachment(s):

Re: Need opinions PLEASE!!
We have something similar but it's fake brick paneling. I painted it white until we're ready to redo it all.

Re: Need opinions PLEASE!!
I think I'd paint it white, you'd get the subway tile effect (sort of!).

Re: Need opinions PLEASE!!
I would def paint it, but a different color than the walls. Maybe the same color as the trim in the room.

You could paint it (I'd probably do white) but I don't think it's that difficult to remove. Then you could just tile it or even paint it until you decide what you want to do.

Re: Need opinions PLEASE!!
I would definitely paint it white - use a high gloss paint that will be easy to clean. We did that with all the wood in our kitchen.

Re: Need opinions PLEASE!!
I actually don't mind the brick look if you reface the cabinets to a darker wood. With the right paint color on the walls, wall hangings and accessories you can give the kitchen a very italian tuscany feel.

I actually like it! If you changed the cabinet hardware, you could make it look more modern. If you really have to get rid of it, I think if you did a white wash to give it an old look, it would look nice.

I agree, I think with some funky silver hardware it would make a word of change.
I grew up in a family of bricklayers so its like a cardinal sin to paint over brick

Re: Need opinions PLEASE!!
I actually like it too! It is not a really dated looking red brick - the colors are very usable! I would coordinate the walls and I would see about changing the cabinet faces instead to update it. But, if that isn't an option - a nice bright white always makes things nicer

I would paint it white ( the brick) and change the hardware
it's the hardware that is making it look dated to me

I agree with this and is probably what I would do...
I couldn't bring myself to paint brick.

Re: Need opinions PLEASE!!
if you are going to redo the kitchen eventually, I would just leave it for now-its not bad looking. I think it would look weird if you painted it a solid color to match the walls. Its sort of like youre trying to make it something its not....

I would change the hardware and paint the walls first. I actually like it too, and you might once you've done that first. if not, then I'd paint it white.

Re: Need opinions PLEASE!!
Thank you for all of your replys.
In response to some of them...
DH doesn't want to get rid of it b/c he doesn't want to run into problems and then it becomes a whole job...
We are not refacing the cabinets b/c when we eventually do redo the kitchen we aren't just refacing, things need to be moved, added & changed
I am changing the hardware to brushed silver but unfortunately it is a very plain pull...I could only find TWO kinds that fit the cabinets .
I spoke to DH and we are kind of deciding between two things. There is a wood panel (sort of orangy color) around the whole bottom half of the kitchen. The cabinets are an off whitish color and then the wall color (whatever that may be)....if we paint the brick white it will be too many colors.
SOOOOOOO help me decide.......should we paint the wood around the bottom of the kitchen white AND the bricks white and then the top of the kitchen another color (suggestions please )I'm thinking this may open up the kitchen up a little by making it bright....OR..... should we leave the orangish bottom and the bricks the way they are (they kind of match) just changing the hardware??? Then paint the top of the kitchen (what color would match
).......OR.......any other suggestions
Thank you all so much!!
Sorry the picture is a little dark but hopefully you get the idea...right now the kitchen is painted yellow.... Image Attachment(s):
