Need more town help...

So, we are still looking in Westchester, but we are also looking on LI because the taxes are out of control, and we may fare better on LI.

I am trying to target three areas/school districts to look in. Wanting to look at the best SD's on LI. Still need a good/easy (hour or under commute to NYC), and I would prefer a town with a "town center" and a urban/community feel.

So far I am thinking...

RVC
Half Hollow Hills (Dix Hills, Melville)
East Williston (Roslyn, Greenvale)

I don't want to look in Merrick, because that is where I am from, and I don't want to move back there... Anywhere else??

Our family is in Roslyn, Old Westbury and Melville-- and to be honest, I really don't want to be 5 mins from anyone. Too close for comfort for me.

eta-- prefer move in ready and updated. No more than $800K.

I might be in the minority here, but I don't consider Dix Hills/Melville to have a town center per se, nor an urban feel/community feel. We started out looking in Dix Hills and eventually looked elsewhere because there really isn't a town center or have a small community feel.

Great Neck? Plainview?

Hungtington & Long Beach are fun, but not sure of the schools.

Syosset/Woodbury. I grew up here. It's a 60 minute or so express train ride to the city. The area by the train has a nice town feel to it and you are close to all the highways and parkways.

Im with you on the town feel.

I woudl suggest Huntington if you want the town feel. Or Cold Spring Harbor, Ceterport, Northport, Babylon.

All can get into the city in an hour. Train from Babylon is express and Northport/centerport- I'd take the train from Huntington as there are more options and you don't have to transfer.

Im in Farmingdale and it has the town feel and train is 45 mins during peak.

My first thought was Great Neck and then North Port.

I know you are looking in Westchester and LI but have you thought about Bergen County? I absolutely love Tenafly but it was out of our price range and was to far north for DH's job. It has great school and beautiful parks.

I was thinking the same thing about Dix Hills. I was thinking Northport or Huntington for a town feel but if you want to keep the commute under an hour you may want to consider Great Neck. I know the train ride into the city is about an hour from Huntington but by the time you drive/park/walk to the train, get into the city, get to the office it just ends up being closer to 1.5 hours or even more.

ETA: Port Washington has a really nice town feel to it. Have you checked Oyster Bay?

Syosset, Plainview or Jericho

If you are concerned about the commute and railroads, take a look at the LIRR schedules and see how frequently the trains run. That was a big factor in where and how we chose to buy as DH works in downtown Brooklyn. The areas that I wanted to look at were horrible for his commute.

If I was in that price range, I would def. without a doubt move to great neck. the location is phenomenal, can't beat it and the train ride to the city is short.
