Need MORE advice on SD's...but in Suffolk..please

Looking at Suffolk County...can anyone list some top school districts out there?

I've heard the following:

1. Commack
2. Smithtown

I live in East Setauket - Three Village schools are pretty good.

I know Smithtown is good as well. Not sure about Commack.

Northport - East Northport , Hauppauge and Kings park are also good.

I looked into Middle Country, and they seem to have a lot of money troubles, so I plan on staying away.

sachem is good, I would argue its the top.

I would look on newsdays website for the report cards and decide what is important for you - many districts have great athletics or music, etc.

Cold Spring Harbor is great but very $$$$. I think that Northport, Harborfields, Kings Park are all pretty good as well. Not too familiar with Sachem except that it is huge!!!!

I went to Sachem so I am biased but DH is concerned that it has just gotten too big for it's own good.

I also would argue Sachem being the top. I think 3 Village and Harborfields usually rank very high. Npt-Enpt and Sayville are excellent too.

Commack is good I grew up there. KP is good too-a bit more "blue collar but cute down by the water. Lots rae pretty small that I've seen. Commack is typical suburbia-1/4 acre lots-lots of splits and ranches on the North side-bigger houses on the South

Re: Need MORE advice on SD's...but in Suffolk..please

I am looking for houses in the following SD's in Suffolk:

Harborfields
E NPt
Smithtown
Three Village
Sachem
Sayville
Connetquot
The Islips
Hauppauge
Kings Park
Commack

The towns we like are Holbrook, E. Setauket, Smithtown, St. James, Lake Grove (sachem SD though), Nesconset, and those other areas. We need to narrow it down!

I agree. None of the districts you are looking at are bad districts. They are all good districts.

Oh and BTW - I went to East Islip, so I agree out of all the Islips, I like EI the best too Chat Icon

Re: Need MORE advice on SD's...but in Suffolk..please

I lived in West Islip for all but 8 mths of my life and can say the district is good. Is it the best? Depends on what you are looking for. Just like any district it has its ups and downs. But overall, its a good town to grow up and live in.

My DH and his family on the other hand grew up in West Babylon and their schools are good schools also.

The house we are closing on next week is in West Babylon, and I am happy with the district that our child-to-be will be going to school in 5 years.

All the other districts are "good" too. I honestly think there are more good SDs than bad school districts it just depends on what makes it "good" to you.

Re: Need MORE advice on SD's...but in Suffolk..please

FH is a teacher, he does all the SD research - he is big into sports/music/art programs as well as academic.

I do all the mortgage research. we're such a team. We'd rather stay north of the LIE due to work locations, but I have been sneaking Holbrook and Sayville onto the list

a friend teaches at 3 village, the taxes are insane in the district and she says that is not what it once was. I love the areas that it surrounds so it is on our list.

Just a note, I believe EI school budget was not passed and they are on a contingency budget. They are cutting extra programs and 30+ teaching positions.

Re: Need MORE advice on SD's...but in Suffolk..please

I would say West Islip is good, my brother is graduating from WI on Saturday. I have to say when people found out my brother was sick the community really got together and has done a lot for my family. The school had fundraiser and raise a generous amount of money for anything that my brother needs. It is really amazing the amount of support emotional the teachers have been offering, the nurses even commented how they never seen such an outreach of support from a school and classmates as they have for my brother. I still live in WI and love the area and the schools.
