Need help - baby screaming shortly after putting him down to sleep??

Has anyone gone through this? Lately DS wakes up screaming about a half and hour to an hour after I put him down to sleep. It is not every night. I can soothe him back to sleep but I am just curious as to what this is? Night terrors? Teething? I am so clueless!!! I am just hoping not to start any bad habits Chat Icon

How old is the baby? My DD did this maybe around 10 months or so. At first I was comforting her; but then it wasn't stopping. I decided to try CIO & it worked fine after a brutal 3 nights.

When DS was overly tired and would fall asleep almost before he went down in his crib, he would wake up a half hour later screaming. I think it was because he was too tired to realize he was going into his crib. Nights that he would go into his crib completely awake, it wouldn't happen. If you think that is the case, maybe you could move up his bedtime.

It could also be teething. DS wakes up screaming a lot when he is teething Chat Icon

He is 6 months old. I nurse him to sleep and always have. There is no way I can nurse him without falling asleep. It is after his bath and he is so warm and comfortable he just automatically falls asleep this way. It was never an issue, I don't know why he would start doing this now? Chat Icon

It is a terrible scream. I was going to let him CIO but it didn't sound like his usual whine. Perhaps he is playing me though and knows what will get me to rock him back to sleep.

I gave him a couple of teething tablets and rocked him to sleep. How do you know if it is teething or bad habits??

I had a similar experience with DD - when she was overtired, she would wake about 20-30 minutes in. Weissbluth also says this is the case when babies wake shortly after going to sleep. I agree with the above poster and would move up his bedtime by a bit.

Okay I am bumping this because I still need advice.

Tonight, he woke as soon as I put him down and started crying. I let him CIO Chat Icon Thank God it only took 20 minutes but he was screaming bloody murder Chat Icon

He usually wakes 6 or 7 hours after I put him down to feed (around 1 or 2 am) and then 4 hours after that (around 5 am). He is then up at 7ish for the day. Last night for some reason he awoke only once around 2ish and then 7ish for the day. Should I let him CIO when he wakes at night too?

Re: Need help - baby screaming shortly after putting him down to sleep??

This happened to us the last two nights too. DD is almost 6 months old and she screamed like I've never heard her scream before. She already had her 2 bottom front teeth, but I'm pretty sure that her eye teeth are coming in now. I don't have a problem doing CIO normally, but I could tell that she was in pain. DH and I distracted her by singing and then put her down again. I gave her tylenol before bed tonight and so far so good. I'd suggest trying any teething remedies that you have handy...tylenol, teething tablets, whiskey. Good luck!

Since I am a CIO advocate and your DS is 6 months, I would try CIO. As long as he is fed, changed and not in any danger, then I would be comfortable letting him soothe himself to sleep. Good luck! Chat Icon
