putting baby to sleep on his side
for the past two nights, DS has been breaking out of his swaddle. time to get rid of it! so i put him in a sleep sack, but he was not able to fall asleep - he kept putting his hands near his face and knocking out his pacifier.
he will NOT sleep on his tummy (i would be happy if he did!) so i propped him up on his side a little - not totally vertical but just supported on his side a bit. he fell asleep almost instantly.
has anyone else done this and had success with their DC sleeping well?

Re: putting baby to sleep on his side
ok we are now on nap #2 today and once again, he fell asleep very quickly - even when swaddled he doesn't fall asleep this fast!
nap #1 lasted 1 1/2 hours... usually it's 2 swaddled but this is still great! let's see how long #2 lasts...
i hope that we have finally found the answer

What are you using to prop him? My DD usually rolls onto her side, but I start her out on her back.

Re: putting baby to sleep on his side
My baby also loves to sleep on his side...a while back I bought a co-sleeper since DS refused to sleep in the bassinet. It came with a piece that gave the co-sleeper an incline. I took that piece out and put it in the bassinet. That piece and sleeping on his side really helped. For the past month baby has been sleeping in the bassinet and sleeps for 6 hour stretches at night. He's almost 3 months old.

DS also loved to sleep on his side - he could somehow get himself there at a very young age.
As for the swaddle to sleep sack transition it takes a few days. Both my DC were swaddled (DD until 6 months, DS until 6 weeks) and they both needed a few days to adjust to their new found freedom

Re: putting baby to sleep on his side
I started putting DS on his side after we stopped swaddling him. He slept very well like that.

Re: putting baby to sleep on his side
thanks everyone
i hope this is it for us!
Charly, did you do anything different once your DC stopped being swaddled? ie. put them to bed earlier, changed their routine at all?
he is supported by two small, very firm pillows. i really don't want to waste the $$ on a sleep positioner, and the pillows are up against his crib bumper and to me seem very sturdy. i have a video monitor so i am checking on him every few minutes.

Nope. I just put him in his sleep sack and do the routine as usual.
How's it going? Any better?

Re: putting baby to sleep on his side
Wow, do we have the same child?? The EXACT same thing happened last night! He was giving us such a hard time going down and it looked like he was fighting the miracle blanket and that is was too short for him. So I took him out, put him in the sleep sack with arms in and for some reason I tried putting him on his side (since nothing else worked!) and he was OUT cold, slept like a rock all night. He usually is a noisy sleeper but I never heard a peep from him! I tried it for his nap but ended up back in the miracle blanket with his feet out (but he still fought that, now I am having to let him cry for a few min in order to get him down ). That's so funny though, I was so excited he slept through the night without the swaddle!!
