Need happy thoughts- LONGEST POST EVER

Let me preface this with: my baby is FINE (don't want to upset anyone unnecessarily).... Also- get ALL pains checked out- I would likely be in a boatload of trouble if I hadn't.

I had a flu shot last Sat. I started to feel a little achy that Mon (11/27) and worse by Tues (lower back pain, lower abdominal pain). I called my OB-she said it sounded like round ligament pain plus possible side effects odf the shot. I had a fever of 100 that night (took Tylenol).

Wednesday, I felt REALLY cruddy by the time I got home. I had a 101 fever and more persistent abdominal and back pain (lower), PLUS I felt like I was having trouble peeing. I went to one of those local clinics where they ran a urine analysis. It came back clean, no UTI, but they wanted to give me antibiotics anyway. I opted to wait to see my OB in the morning (Thurs, 11/28).

Went to OB where they took another urine sample (which at this point was at a trickle) and sent me home with a script. I was UNABLE to urinate for the rest of the day (and I was CHUGGING cranberry juice).

By 7 pm, DH and I were in the local ER because I was in SO much pain and my abdomen looked like I was way more pg than I am (11 weeks). Thankfully, they got me right into a room where the nurse put a catheter in my and drained my bladder. I was still REALLY tender and in pain, so a PA came in, felt around my abdomen and called for blood work. My urine analysis STILL came back clean (so NO UTI) even though I was totally symptomatic. My blood came back with high white blood cells, which signify infection- and I had another fever.

There was a somewhat hard spot along my bikini line that I had been feeling over the past week and had thought it was my uterus. Apparently, it shouldn't be there, nor should it hurt. So they call for an ultrasound....

At this point I am FREAKING. I was convinced that the baby had died and hadn't miscarried and now I had an infection in my uterus. I was sobbing in that little room with DH trying to hold himself together.

We went to ultrasound where we saw our baby- MOVING and saw the HB (169bpm)Chat Icon

The the tech moved to the other side of my uterus where the "spot" was. I have a large fibroid growing just outside my uterus, along with a few small ones in various areas (also outside the uterus). Plus a cyst on my left ovary.

I spoke to my OB this morning- she reviewed all the info and said that whats happening is that the fibroids are dying. Apparently small fibroids are normal in pg, just not that big. When they die, they cause discomfort. Because of the size of the one, and the number of others, she said that I am going to be in excrucuating pain for the next few days.

To keep me comfortable, and to keep the baby from being stressed, she is prescribing Tylenol w/codeine, but said that she may check me into the hospital and put me on a pain pumpChat Icon

This can't be happening at a more WORSE time- next week is my last week of classes - and I have a TON of work and presentations due.....

My mom is flying in from NY tonight or tomorrow to be with me, as my husband has to be back in VA for work on Sat night.

This pg has been a mess- WHY can't I have morning sickness like normal women. DH reminded me how devastated I was last night when I thought we had lost the peanut, which brought me back to reality. I am so thankful the baby is OK- but I'm worried what kind of effect all this medication might really have.Chat Icon

Thanks for reading....
Amy

Don't forget - our mothers did not stop taking medications or smoking when they were pregnant. I am sure they would not give you anything that would harm the baby.

I am glad you know what was causing the pain -- I always feel the worst is not knowing. I hope you get better very quickly and have a nice smooth uneventful pregnancy from here on in!

Re: Need happy thoughts- LONGEST POST EVER

first of all...hugs....

second of all--take care of yourself and do not worry...codeine is considered a safe med during pregnancy.
They give cough med with codiene in it to pregos who have a horrible hacking cough that iwill not stop.
they will not give u anything bad.
You thank goodness caught this before it got any worse...
take care--and bite your tongue--who wants morning sickness after all this?

take care!Chat Icon
