need advice re: sleeping away from home

DS is two months old and tends to get a little fussy at night when he is tired. when we are home i notice this,. put on his swaddle me, and try to feed him one last time - he usually falls asleep very quickly, sometimes without nursing.

however we spend a lot of time at my parent's house and my IL's and often we are there around his bedtime. he gets fussy as always, but cannot settle down enough to go to sleep. even if i go sit with him in a darker room/area of the house, and give him a bottle or use a pacifier (which often works at home too) he won't go to sleep. i don't feel comfortable nursing away from home (that is just my personal preference) but i know he can fall asleep without nursing, so i know that is not the issue.

any advice? i don't want to have to be confined to my house for the next year Chat Icon

I can tell you it took a long time for me to have Jack sleep at my parents house - I think he was 10 months old maybe. They adjust and get used to it. He has slept at my parents one other time - and only cried for 1 minute - vs. 25 the first time!

Eventually, we all need a little break! Chat Icon

Claire was the same way. She seemed preoccupied with everything going on-maybe she thought she would miss out if she went to sleep? I have no real advice because she hasn't really grown out of it and she is 14 months-it is harder to get her to sleep or to keep her on a schedule when we are visiting others. Maybe bring a PNP? We just deal with it-lots of Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon and I hope it gets easier for you, but I wuldn't skip get togethers.

Re: need advice re: sleeping away from home

I know that when I go to my parents that DS is overstimulated because every time I have gone everyone wants to hold him all the time and its very loud! I bought a tummy time mat for their house and I let him play on the floor for a little too so he doesn't just want to be held. Sunday he was pretty much awake all day and at the end of the day he ended up just passing out on his tummy time mat he was so tired!

ETA: If you have a PNP, one of my friends suggested bringing a sheet from home that way they can smell home.

Re: need advice re: sleeping away from home

The best piece of advice anyone ever told me about babies is that EVERYTHING is a phase.... so your baby's habits will def change over the next year, so don't worry too much about having to stay put for so long!

I went through the same thing, and I looking back, I think it was so hard for my son to settle was because he was overtired.... when we are out and visiting, more people hold him, fuss over him and he often missed naps, and sometimes wouldn't even get one. So when night time rolled around, he was WIRED!

Try and make sure your guy gets extra naps while your visiting, even just downtime away from all the fuss. And def try putting him down in a dark, quiet spot....
