Need Advice
i had a falling out w/ a friend (met at a previous job) about a year ago and we haven't spoke since. i recently received an invitation to her baby shower from her sister. the sister knows that we don't speak and is somewhat of a pushy person. it was nice for her to include me but under the circumstances, not sure why she did.
i wish her the best of luck but have no desire to attend the shower. i don't want to use the "i have plans" excuse so what should i say?

I agree!
I don't really think you have to make up any excuse as to why you cannot attend. Sounds like the former-friends' sister is a real prize anyhow (if she knew you were no longer friends, why the hell invite you )

I agree except for the hanging up part. If asked "Why not?" I would just answer "I have something planned for that day." even if those plans are staying home...they are still plans

Re: Need Advice
i don't think she would question why i wasn't able to attend but i wouldn't put it past her to say something like, "oh, what a shame. i really think xxx would enjoying seeing you and sharing the special day. it's really too bad that you can't come".
more along the lines of rubbing it in and having her look like the better person for thinking of me.

Re: Need Advice
I would answer the invitation that you can not attend and if they should call I would be honest. I would say we havent spoken in some odd years...the end. I just read your posting above me...do you definitely feel like not going or are you kind of in between? Because if you definately do not want to go then all of the above advice is good. If you feel like you want to go, or maybe you should go, then I would consider giving you different advice.

Re: Need Advice
I always use the "Sorry I already have plans...." line. Even if those plans involve laying on my couch watching Law and Order reruns. I am a bad liar and usually the fewer details I give, the better. Most people do not ask exactly what the plans are anyway.
It seems like maybe she is seeing this as an opportunity for the two of you to reconcile. If the friend who is pregnant asked the sister to invite you, I think she should call you to talk first, not just spring it on you. If she doesn't know about it, it is pushy of the sister and could be very uncomfortable for both of you.

Can you call at a time you know she's not home and leave a short but sweet message about not being able to make it?
