Nassau County $ 105 Ticket Surcharge Fee

As some of you who live in Nassau may already know, Mangano is proposing a $105 surcharge fee on traffic tickets as part of the proposed budget. This fee means your expired parking meter ticket will balloon to $ 220, expired registrations $ 285, and god forbid you cross a traffic light camera intersection as it turns from yellow to red, as your fine will be $255 or more.

You can call/email your local legislator here:

Re: Nassau County $ 105 Ticket Surcharge Fee

The traffic cameras will only ticket you if you cross the line after the light is fully red.
So if you are in the intersection when it's turning yellow to red you are ok.

Yes these fines are extreme. I posted a thread a few weeks ago about how my DH got a ticket for parking head out instead of head in at a train station parking lot, the ticket is $135.

It's ridiculous that these surcharges almost double the actual ticket.

It's a lot, but not always a bad thing to make people more careful.
I do wish people would pay attention to when they're allowed make a right on red bc the red light cameras have people stopping at the yellow and not turning even when allowed. Always seems to happen at one intersection in particular and it's really annoying.

This is not the same as running a red light. Your DH did not endanger anyone by parking backwards.

You know who I want ticketed? The people who pull out of parking lots without looking. The ones who don't signal when changing lanes. The asshats who make the left onto Sunrise Highway from Bellmore Ave. after the green arrow changes (obviously this is specific to me). The number of accidents and near accidents I see every day is astounding.

I don't care if your registration is expired or you didn't feed the meter (where are all these meters in Nassau county anyway?) I care that these POS drivers think they own the road and drive like d!cks.

Yessss!
The tail gaters. The people who ride up your ass in traffic - because yeah, you have somewhere to go in bumper to bumper traffic.

Or the ones who are better than everyone else in rush hour traffic on the service road and get in the right turning lane at a light- only to go straight and cut you off- because they were too good to wait in the line of traffic in the straight lane.

This morning a crossing guard was killed in Hempstead. Run down by a speeding pick up truck.
It's horrifying.

An expired parking meter is not putting anyone's life in danger.. neither is an expired registration. I got a ticket for that and my registration was NOT expired.. I just forgot to switch the sticker.

I don't live in Nassau county but my DH got a ticket last year and the filing fee was more than the fine!!! And I'm one who almost NEVER would fight a fine. I'm all about accepting responsiblity, but it's ridiculous when the processing fees are more than the fines themselves.

No they are not, that is why there are rules and consequences to those rules.

Do we live in a lawless society? No.

Do you REALLY believe a $105 fee to PAY YOUR TICKET is appropriate?
I'm not arguing if I do something wrong and I get fined, but now you want me to PAY $105 to pay my fine?????

And also, those red light cameras are a joke. If they want to put them out, they need to ALSO put up "No turn on red" signs. I got THREE tickets, from the SAME intersection in my town. The video footage shows me coming to a FULL stop, and then making the right turn (from a turning lane) -
I can't tell you how many others have had the exact same problem, and they went to fight it, and were basically told "too bad" - Noone who knows better makes that right on red anymore. So, you now have a bunch of road raged people behind them honking and getting annoyed .......

Mangano needs to get locked up, and have the key tossed into the ocean.

Lol, maybe that's why people don't turn at my intersection. But I never get a ticket for it, so it's definitely allowed.

Suffolk fees are $143.

I got a speeding ticket. The ticket itself was 150, plus fees and shit it cost me $293. Plus they had the audacity to charge a 3.5% fee for using a charge/debit card.

Here's the thing. Even if you are legally allowed to make a right on red at that particular light, these cameras are bogus because they say that you have to stop for a FULL 6 seconds before turning. It isn't just that intersection. It's all of them.
It is ludicrous and arbitrary.
DH was a cop and said that the LAW states a right on red is to be treated like a stop sign. Meaning FULL stop, no wheels moving, then proceed when safe.
The LAW does not state how long you have to stop for.
However, the company that installs these cameras and issues the tickets for the towns and counties makes this the "rule".
If a cop witnessed you do it, you would never get a ticket. But these cameras are utter bullshyt and it's all to make even more money for the county.
It's a scam, a sham and should be illegal.

In fact, I thought I heard the red light cameras were ruled illegal and were being phased out due to this.

They are getting put up all over Brentwood, CI and one other town and they actually said to help with gangs. People are up in arms because it's just racial profiling. How the hell is that going to help stop gang members.

They are putting license plate readers in Brentwood, CI, and Bay Shore...I didn't think they were the same as red light cameras? They said it is only used for crimes, not traffic infractions.
