Names - Popularity Matter To You?
Someone on TTC posted a baby name 'popularity website'.
http://our365.com/wisdom/babynamescape/
Does it matter to you - if your names are in the top 10 for your state?
I was just curious if it mattered to anyone....i'm slightly bothered - but not overly.... I KNOW Dave won't mind...

Re: Names - Popularity Matter To You?
Our name is on the list.. and to be honest.. it doesnt bother me at all.. we have reasons for choosing the name, and just because its popular, isnt going to change our minds...
just my opinion... I know there are many on here who would say it does...

Re: Names - Popularity Matter To You?
Since I don't LOVE any of what I think are the current popular names, it doesn't bother me but I'm not sure how I'd feel if my favorite name of all time was the most used name.

Re: Names - Popularity Matter To You?
Bothers me, because I really like some of the recurring top 10 names, but I personally don't want to name my baby the same name that 10 other kids on the playground have too.
I remember growing up and being surrounded by Jennifers and Jessicas.....absolutely nothing wrong with the names, but it's just there were so many of them that they ended up being distinguished by either last name initial or physical descriptions. There was big Jenn, little Jenn (seriously how awful is that when you think about it???) and Jessica C and Jessica M. I just want my kids name to be his own. I know there's no guarantee he won't share a name with someone at some point but I just don't want half his friends to have the same name as him, that's all.

Re: Names - Popularity Matter To You?
It did, but then a lot of the names I liked were in the popular list. I had an especially hard time coming up with boy names that weren't high up there. What we decided was to go with something that seemed a little more traditional than trendy, even though both the names were popular.
Thats a cool website.

Re: Names - Popularity Matter To You?
our name isn't on the list, but to be honest if it were i don't think it would sway my decision, i am happy that its not an overly popular name, considering I'm a Jennifer, and hated that I had 20 other Jennifer's in my class, so I like that our DD will have a some what rarer name...

Re: Names - Popularity Matter To You?
both of our names are on there...in fact, in the US - our boy name is number 1. our girl name is number 4 in both US and state...
i bothers me a little, as i don't want our children to be in a class and have 20 other kids with their names.... BUT - i know Jennifer and Jessica were HUGE when i was growing up - but i knew only 3 other Jessica's maybe in my 'schooling' life...

Doesn't bother me in the least.
ETA: The name we chose is actually #1 on the list of girls names at the hospital I am delivering at.

Popularity doesn't matter to me, but I personally don't like "trendy" names. We've chosen very classic names.

No it doesn't matter to us, we picked out names that we like and if other people like them too that's o.k.

Re: Names - Popularity Matter To You?
I'd prefer our son to have a not so popular name.
I have a very popular name. I don't mind terribly but probably would have preferred a less common name. A few weeks ago, I was with a group of people and four of us had the same name!

Re: Names - Popularity Matter To You?
Doesn't matter - my DD was number 13 on the list the year she was born. But that was the name I wanted for years, and I didn't care that is it was suddenly popular.

Re: Names - Popularity Matter To You?
DH has a relatively popular name, and so does BIL, so they come from a place where they hated "sharing" their name. I have a pretty uncommon name and I liked to be the *only one* with it, so we do not love popular names. I think just like anything else it is a very personal thing though, and to each their own.

Re: Names - Popularity Matter To You?
Not really....
I mean if they name I loved all my life hits the list, then Im not going to let that stop me.
However- If I had no names picked out...I prob would avoid the ones on the list...
If that makes any sense... lol

Re: Names - Popularity Matter To You?
As a Jennifer, I do want my child to have a name that is a little unique. I didn't like being one of many many Jennifers in my school. but if I really really liked a name and it was on the list, it wouldn't be a big deal to still use it. I survived!

Re: Names - Popularity Matter To You?
I don't like names that are too popular. I prefer names that are known, but where the kid won't have 5 other kids in their class with the same name. I overlook this slightly if I really love a name.

Re: Names - Popularity Matter To You?
One of our girl choices is on the NY list but not the USA or NC list (we'll be moving to NC this summer)
I personally could care less if people love or hate our names! We're choosing them because WE love them and thats really all that matters
