Name Alexander...
Do you know any Alexanders who go by Xander? What are your thoughts/opinions? Too strange? Do half the people just call him Alex ( ie- doctors, teachers, pharmacists, would all assume it's Alex, right?). Which NN do you like better? Is Alex more of a girls NN now?

I'm personally not one for nicknames. I prefer to just go with the name you like. So if you like Xander, name him Xander. If we had had a girl we would have named her Charly. It wouldn't have been short for Charlotte or Charlene. We also tossed around Franky, not Francesca.

I knew an Alexandra in HS that went by Xander. But I agree if you want to call him that then just name him that.

I agree. I think people get too caught up with nicknames. What if your son wants to be called Alex when he gets older? I really don't think it makes a difference. I know someone who has a son they named William but everyone calls him Liam. I don't get why they just didn't name him Liam to begin with.

this is exactly how I feel. I was going to name my DS jax and it wasn't going to be short for anything just jax (got talked out of the name by DH )
I never really understood the purpose of giving a child one name when you have every attention calling them by a different one why not just give him that name (I know I am the minority on this but it just how I feel )

Re: Name Alexander...
I suppose I'm in the minority here, but I believe in giving your child a name that can grow with them, and not giving a nickname As the actual name. It can be shortened to their/your liking and their growing personality when they are younger, but then they can have a full name should they become a professional one day. As far as your specific question goes, I'd say that nicknames evolve to the personality of the child, rather than predetermination. For me, Chris was a fine occasional nickname, but I was NOT a Chrissy. I'm glad that was not predetermined for me by my parents at any point! And we thought of Mia as a nickname for our daughter Amelia, until a relative got a dog and named it Mia! Glad we didn't predetermine that one either! I hope this long ramble makes sense!

Re: Name Alexander...
I love Xander for Alexander. If I was having another boy... That would have been my name.
I agree with a full name. My closest friend legally changed her name out of a nickname (Cathy to Catherine) because it was more professional. I know a Jenny who did the same. Yes, most people call them by the nicknames, however, it looks better to have a full name on a CV.
My son has nicknamed himself Andy. People get it right immediately after he tells them & he's 5. I always figured he'd like Andre... But he's got time.

agree!
DS is Benjamin. I like Ben as a nickname and he'll "allow" me to call him that. DS prefers Benny and has since he was 3. He also loves his full name - Benjamin Gabriel. No one ever calls him Benji (which I hate as a nickname)
I think using Xander for Alexander is fine. People will adjust to what you (at first) and then he tells them to call him.

Re: Name Alexander...
I like giving a full name, and you can nickname him whatever you want as long as you start it right away. My son is named after my husband, but has a nickname. I tell teachers, drs, etc his nickname right away when asked. I usually write that name when signing him up for programs and sports.

I disagree with this. I have no problem with nicknames, but I think the more formal name should be your legal name. While I LOVE the nickname "Frankei" for Francesca, or Charlie for Charlotte etc. I wouldn't want to put "Frankie" on a resume or something as an adult.
I like Alex better than Xander, personally - but if you name your child Alexander, and YOU call him one over the other, everyone will follow suit KWIM?

I am sorry I don't understand this why would a "nickname" not be able to grow with a child and not be professional. if anyone is denied a job based on their name or looked at as not a professional because what they are named then there is a problem with that person judging. and if the persons name is a "nickname" it technically isn't a nickname and its their actual name. I dont know how Alex is not professional or Chrissy is not a professional name etc
FTR I don't find it to weird to call an Christopher a Chris again I would have just named my kid Chris if that's what I wanted to call him.
what baffles my mind is people who name their kid John legally but call them a completely different name like Mike

Because nicknames are usually sing songy in nature - and most adults, CHOOSE to use their full name, in a professional capacity when intorducing themselves. Introduging yourself as Jennifer sounds more mature and professinal than introducing yoiurself as Jen or Jenny ....No one is DENIED a job based on their name being Timmy vs. Tim or Timothy .....but there is absolutely a first impression to be made on people ......
those types of nicknames are usually reserved for friends and family. When you name your child Frankie, you're taking away that choice for them as an adult.
Almost every single Tommy, Timmy, Johnny, Billy, Danny, Eddie etc I knew growing up as a kid wanted to be called Thomas, Tom, Tim, John, Bill, etc as a young man/adult. Same goes for the girls ........
Obviously, people can name their children whatever they choose to ........

Name Alexander...
A boy in DD's class is named Alexander, but the mom wants everyone to call him Zann. It hasn't really taken off, even though she always calls him Zann and all of his personalized stuff says Zann. Her other son is Nicholas and she is always trying to get people to call him Nico. She complains that everyone calls them by their full names, or other nicknames (Alex, Nicky) and I told her she should have just named them their nicknames if it bothers her. She said she wanted them to have the option of the full name when they grow up/professionally. I say, name your kid what you want, call them what you want!

My DH is Tim - he HATES being called Timmy or Timothy. My MIL had intended on calling him and my BIL CJ and TJ, respectively, but luckily the nicknames didn't take. I think nicknkames are just that - a cutesy or quick way of saying a name - but shouldn't just take the place of their given names for the rest of their lives, otherwise, just name them that!

but my point is why is not being introduced as Jenny not professional or mature who says Jennifer is such a professional name. there name is Jenny and given them a "nickname" has a real name is not forcing the person to use a nickname its forcing a person to use the name given to them they have no choice when they are named so what does it matter if there real name is a "nickname" vs a regular name.
I cant believe people base a their first impression on a person by a name they had no say in getting.
I don't know when I chose the name for my kids it never occurred to me I have to give them a name that will sound professional. I just worried about if I like the name and my husband like the name and that's about it

Name Alexander...
I'm not a big nickname person but it's really a personal choice. If I was to like a "nickname" I would have just named my child that. My nephew is Jack but his real name is John. It makes absolutely no sense to me. If they liked the name Jack, name him that.
As far as being professional growing up, everyone is thinking about our generation where more "formal" names are the norm. When our kids are in the workforce, anything goes. The naming today is leaning away from traditional and I don't think anyone 20 years from now would be batting an eyelash at calling their boss "xander" or anything like that.
And to get back on topic, we have a friend who named their child xander. Love it!

My name is Alexandra but have been called "Alex" 99% of my life. IMO, I love my nickname, I even introduce myself as Alex to others. However, I like having a formal name - I like the way it looks on paper. In my experience, people will call your son whatever you call him. My son has a formal name but we all refer to him as AJ. I too worried that people would call him by his legal name but it never happened. I say go with the name you like and give him whatever nickname makes you happy!
