My turn...(long)
It is with great excitement (and a quite a bit of fear) to announce that DH and I are currently 11 weeks and 5 days pregnant. We have endured a process that we did not expect, but every single step of the journey was worth it. We became patients of Dr. Rosenfeld at NSUH after I was diagnosed with cervical stenosis during a failed attempt at an HSG. After having a laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, D and C and tubal lavage with Dr. R., we were ready to start the IUI process as my cervix was still too stenotic to conceive naturally. The first IUI was unsuccessful. The second IUI was successful but ended soon after in a chemical pregnancy. It su ck ed but we made peace with it our way feeling it was G-d’s will. We skipped a cycle to make sure all of the PG hormones were out of my system. We felt as if we needed to keep this process more personal and private and tried to keep our processes to ourselves. Creating our child had become an event where everyone in our lives just knew too much, though we were (and are still) extremely grateful for all of the support given to us. It hit me especially hard that I simply couldn’t make a baby with the man I love the way nature intended. So we decided that we would be a bit more discreet. We skipped a cycle and started again. Our third IUI was also successful, however the HCG levels stopped doubling. I was put on progesterone suppositories in the event of a turn around, but it was futile. I miscarried at a little over 6 weeks. DH and I again decided to mourn privately. It was VERY hard on the both of us. I had to go to work in a great deal of physical pain while showing my happy face. DH and I had to go to “simchas” in our family, put on smiles and dodge the dreaded “So? …When…?” questions while we were losing our baby. After a while, we were tired of fielding questions and having close friends and family members, questioning the care we were receiving. And trust me, they did and STILL do. We were able to make peace with the losses in our own way, trusted our physicians and wished everyone else could/would also. It hurt to be an educated and researched adult and have people question your judgment. On to IUI cycle # 5. I am rarely an early tester, but I tested at 10DPO and saw a faint line, tested again the next day again with FRER and a digital. Sure enough, I was PG. Now I am 3 for 5 unmedicated IUI’s. Just as I was excited, I was fearful and until bloodwork was done, it wasn’t real. As a very wise LIFer told me – miscarriage changes you forever (and it does.) This time, the HCG and progesterone numbers were much higher to begin with and were significantly higher than in the first 2 pregnancies at the same point in time. I had 4 Betas in total and then Doctor stopped testing - I was officially pregnant. On January 9th, DH and I saw the flutter of a heartbeat for the very first time. Not only were we finally looking at this amazing creation after so many months of disappointment, but it was also my late father’s birthday and we always planned that our first child would be named to honor him. I felt a peace and calm that I hadn’t felt before. I will always believe that my father’s spirit is keeping this child safe. We were held slightly longer as patients based on our experiences and my age. Two and a half weeks later, we went back for one more sono to assure viability and we were released back to my OB/GYN practice. Dr. Rosenfeld shook DH’s hand, gave me a hug and a kiss and I asked him not to retire until we have our second child. He said he wasn’t going anywhere and as long as I brought cookies he would stick around. (I had brought him, the nurses and office staff holiday cookies at Christmas time). I would like to thank the IF and TTC communities for its continued and undying support of mine and DH’s journey. I realize that I do not share many of the experiences that bring us all here as we are all different people with different medical and reproductive issues. You have offered me a haven of comfort in my times of need and I will continue to support everyone as you continue towards your goal of becoming parents. You will all be blessed. I believe that from the depths of my heart. Thank you for allowing me to share my long and verbose story. I hope it can be a source of inspiration for anyone who needs it as you all inspire me daily.
