Re: My Towels Stink

I noticed this about my towels about a week ago. I think it's because I left them in the washer for a while before putting them into the dryer. I've gotten into that habit lately and have to break myself of it.

I had to re-wash the whole load. Chat Icon

add some white vinegar to the water - it will eliminate any smell.

Was just gonna post this.

Try adding some vinegar into your machine, do a cycle with no clothes. The vinegar will kill any mildew in your machine.

Re: My Towels Stink

I had this problem a few weeks ago -- so we soaked them in bleach for a little while and then washed and dried them and they are fine now.

This happens to me when I forget to transfer stuff to the dryer.

If you add vinegar or baking soda to the water do you still add laundry detergent too?

Re: My Towels Stink

We used to have that problem. Now we wash the towels with a little bit of bleach and no more smell!

Re: My Towels Stink

If you leave the door of your washer closed when you're not using it, don't! Leave it open. Your washer will get a mildewy smell from the moisture that's trapped in there. If you leave the door open, it gives the moisture a chance to dry up.

Re: My Towels Stink

Mine got stinky last summer too. My laundry room is in the basement. I add a scoop of baking soda in my laundry, it helps.

Yup and wash them in cold water, not hot. Hot makes the smell worse IME.

Re: My Towels Stink

i agree- transfer right away

i also noticed that after one use and the damp towel hangs on the back of the door, when i go to use it a second time is stinks
i think its because of the warmer weather

anyway, we got though tons of towels because of this

Re: My Towels Stink

Update:

Two things corrected this problem:

I was always setting my dryer on a medium dry setting. It's an old dryer and doesn't have an auto sensor..so I would put it somewhere in the middle and the clothes would be dry but I bet they weren't all the way through. Plus the fact that I would leave them with the door closed for a few days until I was able to take them out and fold them.

Also, transferring right away is key..I would let them sit and then rewash them if I had to then transfer to the dryer...vicious cycle.

So, I just did several loads of laundry and everything smelled great!!! I also used Tide with Febreeze and a touch of downy..(couldn't hurt)..even with fabric softener I would still smell the stinkiness..so I know it's a combo of the above.

Problem solved...thanks for all of your help.

I feel like I just learned how to do laundry after all these years.

Re: My Towels Stink-update..not anymore!

This happens alot if you don't let them dry after use and then throw them in a hamper or laundry basket. I always hang my wet towels in the shower til they dry, once they're dry I throw them in the hamper. Same goes for washcloths, dish towels and especially hte baby's towels. When you leave them wet they smell like mildew and you can't get rid of the smell.
Try arm and hammer detergent. Chat Icon
