My poor baby girl...

Yesterday DH & I were watching my brother & SIL's dog. Grace was in her walker and cornered him. The dog started growling and just as I told DH to keep on eye on it (he was in the living room with the dogs and Gracie and I was in the kitchen) the dog barked really loud and nipped her. Chat Icon My dog flipped out too and went after my brother's dog. Grace was bleeding fro her head and eye. We rushed her to the ER and she needed stitches. They actually fused her with this glue stuff so no stitches, THANK GOD. Gracie has a one inch scratch on her head, one on her eyelid and one under her eye. All of her scratches had to be fused. Chat Icon . DH & I were so scared, but remained calm so Gracie would be calm. At the ER they told us we had to report my brother's dog, by law. We felt horrible and my brother & SIL felt horrible. DH & I felt like THE WORST parents in the entire world.

This dog is usually very gentile and sweet and has NEVER done this to any child and has been around Gracie since she was born. I think when she is in the walker the dog got really scared, plus he was cornered. Please, take this story as a PSA. NEVER leave your child alone in a walker with a dog. Even if you believe the dog would NEVER harm them.

Grace is better today and it looks better than yesterday. I know accidents happen, but when your child is bleeding like that and needs to be rushed to the ER, it is the worst feeling in the world. I hope none of you ever have to go through that. :huggy

Exactly. It all happened in one second flat. No sooner that I said "Hon, keep an eye on Grace" did this happen. The dog was panting a little, but he does that if he is excited or hungry so we did not know he was freaked out, ya know?

Re: My poor baby girl...

Aww...poor Gracie. I'm glad she is ok.

Something similar happened to us last summer. My step-daughter tried to move the dog when he was sleeping and he nipped her. DH had to take her to the ER (she was 9 at the time and I was away on business). She had to get stitches and they made DH report our own dog! DH had to go to court and everything. It was a nightmare. We are very careful with the dog and the baby, but I don't think the dog did this on purpose...he's such a good puppy.

Re: My poor baby girl...

Glad to hear she's OK. She's so young, she'll heal fine, and there won't be any scars.

This is why DW and I constantly try to tell people that *ALL* dogs are wild animals. I don't care how tame, caring, loving, etc they are, they absolutely will attack given the right circumstances. Luckily, most dogs will never even come close to "the right circumstances", but they all have the potential. We keep a very close eye on our dog at all times. We're not worried about him, but are still cautiously wary if he starts acting weird.
DW was a letter carrier for the US Postal Service, and whenever she refused delivery or told the owners to curb their barking dog, the owners would always say "Oh, Barky VonSchauser would never hurt anybody"
Except for the intruder entering their den and appearing to pose a threat to the pack...

I love dogs, but I'm still cautious around them.

Re: My poor baby girl...

This is why I don't get the arguments that break out on the pets board when parents of small children/infants sometimes opt to get rid of the family pet due to safety concerns. Even if you're 100% certain that "Spot" would never-ever hurt your child, the point is that they are animals...plain and simple.

I had a similiar situaiton happen in November (I don't want to go into details) but my child was hurt by the family pet and hubby didn't stand by my decision to get rid of the dog...hence, he's going. That one incident (and Amber is okay) changed my viewpoint and feelings towards the dog forever. No matter how much you love your pets, they will never replace the love you have for your child (unless of course, you're my idiot STBX).

I'm so sorry your baby was hurt Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon You did the right thing and you showed amazing courage by being strong and not falling apart in front of your little girl. I wish I could say I had the same strength. I wanted to punt the dog off the 2nd story balconyChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

This poster is absolutely right. I have three dogs, all of them the biggest babies ever. However, when any one comes in my home, especially, my grandson, they are put in one of the bedrooms. Animals act on instinct and are incapable of rational thought. If they feel cornered or challenged or they believe any member of their pack is in danger, they will act in the only way they know how. It doesn't matter if it's a baby, adult or another animal that is in front of them. My animals are very much a part of my family, but, I would never take any chances.

I'm glad to hear that your little one will be alright.

No matter how much you think you know an animal they can always snap at any moment. Especially when they feel threatened.

Glad Gracie is ok though...

Re: My poor baby girl...

Thanks for posting, I am glad she is oK, what a scare! We have 2 large german shepherds and as great as they are around the baby I'm still super cautious when they are around him. You just can't predict their behavior 100% of the time! This is a great reminder, thanks.
