my neighbors dogs
our neighbors have 2 yorkies who YAP YAP YAP YAP YAP YAP YAP 24/7. the owners let them out in the backyard and just let them bark and bark and bark. even at 430AM. we can hear them when they're in the house. i understand 100% that dogs bark just like babies cry BUT they just let them go at it for what seems like FOREVER. we have never heard them try to quiet the dogs. what (if anything??) can we do about it?? we just moved in less than a year ago and i really don't want to start out on a bad foot with them BUT i am tired of the 430am wake up calls! any advice?

Re: my neighbors dogs
Call your town & check on the ordinances...or you could call them at 4:30am to tell them to please let their dog in.

Re: my neighbors dogs
<--- normal dogs do not bark all the time..mine will only bark if something is in the yard...i would die if my dogs barked at that hour because of my neighbors! Your neighbor needs to be more considerate...i would try talking to them..chances are they are annoying other neighbors as well..so maybe ask around & then talk to them...otherwise call code enforcement or animal control and place a complaint! Good luck!

My yorkies are yappers, annoying I know. But I still make sure it is not annoying to my neighbors. I think it's rude to leave dogs outside that bark all day.
I would call your town but ultimately, it's their house and they pay taxes like you. As long as the dogs are not attacking kids or being aggressive, I'm not sure they'll do much. Unfortunately you're neighbors are just inconsiderate.

Town will def address barking dogs, even if they pay taxes and are not dangerous. They do not have much tolerance for dogs barking, esp if someone files a complaint.

Call the town. If dogs in our town bark more then 20 mins, they get a ticket.

Re: my neighbors dogs
Each town's ordinances are different. In mine (Smithtown), I believe it's 15 minutes continuous noise/barking. Don't take our word for it; find out for yourself. Provide proof if you can.
Sadly, the kind of people who leave their dogs out all the time are usually the kind that convince themselves there's nothing you can do about barking. It's just not true.
It's cheaper to learn how to discipline and train your dog than it is to continue to pay fines because you don't put any effort into solving the problem.
Some of my neighbors didn't even know I had dogs. I encourage them to bark at visitors at the door until I arrive and silence them but I trained them not to bark outside. It's not impossible, even for "yappy" dogs.

Re: my neighbors dogs
I would call the town like everyone else said.. but maybe try talking to your neighbors first (or have you already done this?) Maybe they don't realize how loud and annoying it is because they are just used to it. If you talk to them and it still continues I would call the town & complain

Paying taxes doesn't give you the right to maintain a nuisance on your property. Dogs that bark incessantly at volumes your neighbors can hear are a nuisance and often in violation of local ordinances -- especially when they are barking incessantly at 4:30 AM. That they aren't aggressive doesn't matter.
OP - Have you tried talking to them? I'd talk to them at least once and give them the option of remedying this behavior amicably. Barking incessantly at 4:30 AM on a regular basis is abosolutely unacceptable.
After that, I'd let the authorities handle it. At the next 4:30 AM wake up call, I'd call your local police precinct. I cannot imagine that is not in violation of your local noise ordinance, but your police precinct can tell you. Perhaps a visit from your friendly neighborhood police officer at 4 AM will be the wake up call they need.
You absolutely do NOT need to put up with this behavior - certainly not at 4:30 AM. I've had and been around lots of dogs -- NONE of them barked incessantly.

I have 2 dogs, big dogs, and they bark on occasion, but never incessantly and NEVER at night! I'd want to kill them if they did that!

I have the exact neighbors with the exact dogs.... It's annoying as hell.....our houses are far enough away but they hang out on their deck, and just bark and bark. Im sure the neighbors on the other side of them must get annoyed as well ---its just so rude and selfish. Everyone else in the neighborhood that have dogs.......that are about 10x bigger than them.......barely make a peep.

Re: my neighbors dogs
We're in the same situation. We just moved into the house in nov. The neigbors behind us have two dogs that bark all the time. We can't eat outside, we can't have the windows open.
We called the town and they said they can't do anything unless we have a petition from a few other neighbors and then they can get the police involved. We typed up a letter to put into the mailbox, but when DH went over there the door was open and he just talked to the woman. She said they'd keep an eye on it, but it didn't seem to help, they still bark.
I think people that let their dogs bark like that, they become immune to it. I think i'd skip over talking to them and call your town to see if you need the petition also.

Re: my neighbors dogs
We have this issue - our next door neighbor leaves his dog tied to a leash on their driveway (they have a fenced in back yard - but instead they tie him to a long leash so he comes onto our side lawn etc. They leave him sometimes for hours this way. So he will bark forever. Recently he has been barking at 930, 1030 and often at 11pm (which is fine for DH and I BUT I have 2 girls ages 1 and 3 and he is waking them up constantly). Some nights they must let him out at 4 or 5 am as well. There is another dog on the other side of us as well - and it isn't unusual at night for them to bark at each other over our yard. If it was only for a few minutes I could overlook it - but it is for 30-60 mins at a time. In fact I can't turn on lights or walk by our side door at night or that sets him off as well since he is tied to the driveway on that side of the house.
Nevermind the fact that I feel bad b.c he is tied up - but that is a whole other post.

Re: my neighbors dogs
I hate stories like this. Why even have a dog if you're going to leave it outside all the time? I just don't understand people.
These people should be ashamed of themselves. I have dreams of walking up, leashing these dogs, and just walking away with them. Finding them new homes with owners who actually give enough of a sh*t to train them.
Its the people who dream of violence against the undisciplined, unsupervised dogs that worry me.

I would call on this person ASAP, for the dog's sake (and it will help yours too). That is AWFUL.

Re: my neighbors dogs
Thanks everyone!
We have not talked to our neighbors about it at all. We live on a really small block so we didn't want to start anything.
Our neighbors have a screened-in porch off the back of their house and they just stick the dogs out there most of the time. That's prob. why we hear them ALL THE TIME! We can't close our side door (on the opposite side of the house from the dogs) without them barking. Forget talking in the backyard - they go nuts. Even when I close my car door (again, the driveway is on the opposite side of where the dogs are) they bark.
The husband works for NYPD and must work early shifts so that's why they're out there at 430 am. DH wakes up at 4am every morning for work and hears them every day. I've been woken up countless times from them. They also have them out at 11pm (our bedtime!).
I will talk to DH and see if he wants to try talking to them but it looks like our best bet would be to make a call to the town.
I really wish it didn't have to come to that but seriously have a little respect for your neighbors. Just bc you are used to the dogs yapping all the time doesn't mean we are! Thanks again for all the advice!
ETA: I don't think there is any abuse/neglect going on - it's more of a lack of training. Like I said in my OP, we have never ever heard the owners try to quiet them.
