my birth story- Joel Robert, 12/4/09
Hi everyone... we just got home from Good Sam yesterday afternoon and I wanted to post my birth story before I forgot it.
We had a scheduled repeat c-section on 12/4 for 11.30. We showed up at Good Sam at 9:15 and went through all the paperwork and then went upstairs to the L&D floor. After waiting for about 35 minutes, we went into holding where I changed into a gown and was hooked up to monitors, inserted my IV and did a quick sono to make sure the baby was head down (he was). I was already having mild contractions at this point from a few days before (nothing crazy that they were bothersome).
the nurse asked me if I knew what I was having and I said no.. she took a look @ me and said, I'm guessing "boy"...
At 11.20 I got a ride down to the OR... it was a little weird, and such a HUGE difference from when DD was born (she was a crash section). Walking into the OR was completely weird... the team was going about their business prepping and I was sitting on the table with a nurse freezing my hiney off- it was cold in there. Thankfully they wrapped me in some warmed blankets!
the anesthesiologist started to put in the spinal and that was a little weird.. He had to do it 2xs- the first time it didn't get in the right way I guess... I have to say, it's MUCH easier to deal with a spinal/epidural during labor than it is when you're just not in pain at all... but once he got it in, it was pretty quick, and the nurse that was coaching me through it was totally cool and helpful about it.
the spinal was pretty quick going in, and the anesthesiologist gave me a little something to "take the edge off" which was great.... they put in the catheter and then my DH basically came in and they got started.
I didn't really feel a thing- even the pressure wasn't that bad... apparently I have a ridiculous amount of scar tissue from my first c/s- the Doc said that it was like "someone poured cement in my uterus" and "nothing was moving"... (I'm going to have to get laproscopic surgery down the road to remove the scar tissue after I heal from this c/s)..
Anyway- in what seemed like seconds, he was out and crying - the same nurse that guessed boy said "I'm right- boy! 90% success rate!".. it was totally cute.. DH and I were amazed that we had a boy!
My baby that was supposedly "huge" with a "gigantic head" was born at 7 lbs, 3 ounces and 20" long... (so funny b/c I had a sono at the peri the day before and they were saying how good it was that I was having a c/s.. yadda yadda)...
He has a slight case of Hypospadias which is a 'natural circumcision'- he already looks circusized- and luckily his urethra is in the right place... Just in case, we'll go to a pediatric urologist in 2 months just to make sure he's OK- but as for now, my doc said that if it were his kid, he'd just leave it alone and not circ him.. so we'll see- but I'm totally not stressed about it b/c his penis looks fine to me (not like I have much baby boy penis experience, but whatever).
Healing has been great- the staff at Good Sam was amazing and I have nothing but wonderful things to say about all the nurses, residents, etc.
My tips for c/s women is to take it easy w/ eating right after- with DD I suffered through AWFUL gas pains- worse than the incision pains- and this time I ate the bland hospital foods and had no problems with gas or going to the bathroom at all- I think this made a huge difference in my recovery.. I also got off the percocets before going home and refused the prescription- I've been on advil and fine... still sore, but it's OK.
The girl sharing my room was eating all sorts of outside food (steak, baked ziti, etc) and she had a horrible stomach ache- I totally felt for her b/c that happened to me with Maddie...
If you made it this far- thanks for reading... Maddie's adjusting to her little brother (although yesterday she was calling him sister- which is what she THOUGHT she was getting- ha ha)... first night home was OK- he's a good eater so far and mild mannered, like his sister.

He's soooo cute!! Thank you so much for your detailed bith story! You really made me feel much better about my c/s at good sam in 32 days!

Awww yeahy! Congrats...he is beautiful! I was hoping you'd have a boy now we'll both have a boy and a girl just in reverse. We can swap tips! Feel good and God Bless that sweet little boy of yours.
