My birth story and new pics (long)
Hi everyone - I just wanted to say thank you again so much for all of your prayers and well wishes for my boys, I am home now with Christian and hoping to bring Nicholas home soon as well.
As some of you know, I was diagnosed with cholestasis at 35 weeks, my bile acids and liver enzymes were elevated and I was dealing with extreme itching. Due to the cholestasis, my c-section date was bumped up from 12/9 (38 weeks) to 12/3 but I needed to be monitored constantly after the diagnosis.
On 11/24 (exactly 36 weeks) at 8:30 am I went to the hospital for an amnio to check the babies' lung development to see if it would be safe to deliver them early. The amnio was a piece of cake but after that I was on the monitors and my blood pressure was really high. After a few hours they decided to admit me to L&D to watch my BP and ran a bunch of tests. Around 2pm they came and told me that I had developed HELLP Syndrome, a really dangerous condition that causes seizures or even death to the mother due to hypertension, elevated liver enzymes and low platelet count. So, I was going to have an emergency c-section in about 2 hours.
After that, the anesthesiologist came in to explain that due to my low platelet count he would be unable to do a spinal. The risk of a clot and paralysis was too high so I would have to go under general anesthesia. This was so devastating to me but before I knew it they were prepping me for surgery. At 5:07 pm Christian Joseph was born weighing 5lbs 9oz and 18 inches long. One minute later at 5:08 pm Nicholas John was born weighing 4lbs 15oz and 17 inches long.
They brought Christian to DH while they stitched me up but Nicholas had to go straight to the NICU because he was having trouble breathing. I remember them showing me Christian and I remember seeing my parents but I was pretty out of it after the surgery. DH and I went to the recovery area and I was in a lot of pain and shaking uncontrollably. I got to a room at 11pm and was still pretty banged up. I had to have a magnesium sulfate drip for 48 hours after delivery due to the HELLP syndrome and I was monitored every two hours during that time. Other than that my recovery has not been too bad, although my platelets are still low and I will probably have to go on meds for that.
I was finally able to see Christian early Wednesday morning, he was so beautiful and I am so in love. They took me to the NICU later that day to see Nicholas which was really emotional...he was so tiny and hooked up to all the machines. It was heartbreaking. But he has been doing better every day. Leaving him in the hospital yesterday was the hardest thing I've ever done. I was hysterical but Christian has been keeping me busy so that helps a little bit. The NICU staff at NSUH is amazing and I know he is in good hands.
They are too little to latch right now so I have been trying to pump, which is a little frustrating but I am not going to give up yet. In other news, I am down 27 lbs of the 34 I gained...but my body looks so different!
Just a note about after delivery...I was NOT expecting my hormones to be so all over the place. I have been crying at the drop of a hat and been having crazy mood swings. I forgot that once the babies are born your body experiences such a drop in hormones and it definitely makes you nuts. Every day is a little better though, I just wasn't prepared for such an overload of emotions.

Your boys are just precious!! and.. You look gorgeous after everything you went through!! I hope I look that good. lol
Congrats on the birth of your boys! I love the names. Thanks for sharing your birth story with us. It's amazing to hear how everyone is so different.

Congratulations! I can only imagine how frightening the whole ordeal was, but what a beautiful end result!! And BTW, no one should look as good as you about to have babies!!!
