My backyard is infested with...
MOSQUITOES!!!
I don't know what to do. I went outside to pick basil...was outside MAYBE 2 minutes and got 10 BITES!!!
Then on Saturday while I was out shopping, DH took the kids in the yard for 5 minutes...my poor little guy got 6 HUGE bites on his legs on arms.
We can't go outside at ALL! We don't have any standing water anyplace so I don't know what can be causing it (unless it's just the humidity in the air).
Is there anything I can spray? And...what should I spray? The grass? The air?
Man...I can't wait till Fall!

A buddy of mine has the Mosquito Magnet, it is a propane powered, flameless, trap which he says works very well.

Re: My backyard is infested with...
Do you have any containers outside that are trapping water (maybe a backed up gutter, etc)?
If not, get the spray to spray on your exposed areas when you go to the back yard.
Also, do you have any bats in your area? They love mosquitos and you can set up a bat box on the far ends of your yard.

This sounds strange but people in my family swear by it. You put Joy dish detergent (lemon scented) in a small bowl of water and apparently, they don't come near the area! HTH!

Oh, not at our house. My parents use it for their property in upstate NY and they can enjoy their back yard because of it. They'll always be around, but bats help with large infestations.

I'd try a bat box. My cousin put a bat box up in her yard (Nassau South Shore) and a bat came and was eating a lot of the bugs in her yard. It was pretty cool to watch it flying around.

I was going to suggest the same thing. I think bats eat up to 20x their body weight in bugs.

Re: My backyard is infested with...
definitely search for pooling water. There must be a big non-draining puddle somewhere.... (It could also be in a neighbors yard... maybe a pool that was never summerized, or a waterfall / birdbath?)

Re: My backyard is infested with...
We have the same problem here in VA. Our house back up to a wooded area & they are really bad. I called the clity to have them come spray. As much as I hate that I dont know what else to do.

Re: My backyard is infested with...
We are having the same issue. We live in a very wooded area and the bugs (esp. mosquitos) are HORRIBLE!!!!! I just read that sparrows (i think??) and other birds eat tons of mosquitos and it's helpful to put up lots of birdhouses... I may look like the crazy birdhouse lady soon but I am willing to try it.

Sorry to laugh, but telling Val to attract bats, well
val- they sell this stuff called yard guard that you can spray. Supposedly it creates a fence to keep bugs out.

Re: My backyard is infested with...
Holy [email protected] dunno what's worse...the mosquitoes or BATS!! I see how the bats will help control my mosquito population, but it will scare the living he!! outta me! I have to peruse the insect spray aisles at Home Depot and check what they have. That soap in a dish thing sounds like a good idea! I swear I have no standing water anywhere! My yard gets FULL sun at all times of the day and whatever water is in the grass evaporates by noon.
Did I ever mention how much I hate the summer? Well, I do. Come on Fall!!
Thanks everyone for the awesome advice. I just MAY get desperate enough to buy a {{{{GASP}}}} bat house!

Try the bat houses -- the less chemicals added to our environment the better, for you and your children...and everyone else!!
Bats won't bother you, they just fly a little funny otherwise you wouldn't even know they are there!

My DH says one of his custopmers gets someone to come in every time they have a party and sprays garlic all over the yard. He never has anyone complain of being bitten.

We bought cutter yard guard over the weekend - it is one that you attach to the water hose and spray every where - we haven't had ONE in about 4-5 days
